▪️JOBS IN FASHION▪️ Apeksha Maker and Vaishnav Praveen @TheHouseofPixels

Individually they’re exceptional artists with their cameras. But together, Apeksha Maker & Vaishnav Praveen of The House of Pixels are responsible for some of the most stunning fashion visuals in just 3 years. From being college buddies to working with Sonam Kapoor, this team of two who mostly get their clientele from Instagram, seem to have a pretty solid future.
G:What was your first fashion assignment like?
V:I finished a year early in college where Apeksha was one junior to me.We worked with Pune-based designer Karishma Sahani Khan.
A:I was on the shoot with him but it was more like two friends doing it together.

G: Who are your clientele like?
A: We both shoot different genres. Vaishnav likes to shoot more fashion, whereas I like to do still life and products. So, there is a good balance in our work.

G: Do you think it’s crucial to have a certain qualifications to get where you are?
A: Gaining the technical knowledge in school is something you'll need. It goes hand-in-hand with creativity. It has to be well-balanced because someone can be strong technically might now have a creative side. And if you are only creative but don’t have the technical knowhow in place, it will not work.

G: What was your first Bollywood project?
V: Surprisingly we shot Sonam Kapoor at a Grazia anniversary event in April 2016.
A: We met her because we wanted to figure out what we could do with her. She said that she is ready and since we had our camera we should shoot.

G: Do you have a crazy story behind any of your works?
V: Every shoot is an experience on its own. Our travel stories are the most bizarre ones. Once I shot outdoor for Arpita Mehta’s campaign where two models were with me out on the sea. By the time we finished, the water level had risen and we had to walk our way back the shore!

G: What advice do you have for people aspiring to be in the fashion industry?
V: Take things as they come. You will get where you want to go eventually, but you have to start somewhere. Be spontaneous and be ready to learn more.

▪️JOBS IN FASHION▪️ Sanjay Kumar Dauhaliya, Stylist
Stylist Sanjay Kumar Dauhaliya is a lot of things. He’s a member of the industry’s most enviable style tribe led by stylist Ami Patel. His Instagram identity (@shnoy09) though is explosive on its own, with nearly forty thousand followers tracking every one of his projects and every celebrity friendship. Alia Bhatt and Athiya Shetty probably have him on speed dial. IRL, he is just as bold, as blunt and as colourful as his social media feed.

G: What was your goal in the fashion industry?
S: Honestly, I dreamed of meeting Priyanka Chopra ever since she was crowned Miss World in the year 2000.

G: What was your first job?
S: In 2013, Ami was looking for an assistant and a friend suggested I should try for the position. After completing my internship in Delhi and struggling in Mumbai for months, this was my chance and I nailed it. The cherry on the cake was that my first proper job with Ami was to style Priyanka!

G: Do you think it's necessary to have qualifications to land a job in fashion today?
S: There’s definitely a bias. Pinteresting mood boards hardly works in fashion. If you’re influential and have a sibling, they invariably become stylists and designers without the necessary qualifications. I am the kind of person who has struggled to get the required formal education and then land a job. Styling is something you can’t learn just like that, but you have to know the basics. It may not be exceedingly important but having that kind of knowledge makes things easier.

G: Do you wish you could have done something else with your career at any given point?
S: I come from a small village in Madhya Pradesh where growing up, my aunt and I would secretly dress up dolls with little ghagra cholis. Initially I was made fun of, but now things have changed. I have always wanted to be in fashion. Call me corny, but it’s all thanks to my super fandom for Priyanka Chopra that I’m even here. 📷: @keegancrasto

▪️JOBS IN FASHION▪️ Daman Choudharry, co-owner of modelling agency @runwaylifestyl

Daman Choudharry co-founded Mumbai-based modelling agency Runway Lifestyle with fashion choreographer and film producer RavneetGoraya in 2009. However, Daman had already packed in some years of experience, primarily as a ramp choreographer, along with being a model co-ordinator. Since they had already built a solid network, evolving as an agency was inevitable. That’s how Runway Lifestyle came into existence.

GRAZIA Tell us little bit about yourself.
Daman: I was born and brought up in Dehradun. I worked many jobs, right from working at the Raj Vilas Palace in Rajasthan to call centers in Mumbai.

G: What was your first job in fashion?
D: Someone introduced me to fashion choreographer Alison Woodham, who offered me an assistant position with her. I had no experience but that job is how I got into the fashion industry.

G: Do you think you need to have certain qualifications to have a job in this industry?
D: All you need is presence of mind and the hunger to work very hard. Sometimes, you think you see three tasks at hand but in actuality, the count is ten. You need to figure out how to get things done.

G: Do you wish you had done something different with your career?
D: I wish I could have started a bit earlier. But, it’s been more than 15 glorious years. My growth has been great: I was an assistant to a choreographer, did backstage co-ordination for major fashion properties, and eventually switched to model management.

G: Do you have any advice for people aspiring to be where you are today?
D: This job is incredibly glamorous, although it has little to do with it. But you will get to travel, have flexible hours and many more perks. That being said, there’s no escaping hard work so be eager to hustle.
