🌟 WHY APPLY WEDNESDAY 🌟

What can happen when you take an idea you care about and give it the opportunity to grow?

Meet Marina Barto, co-founder of Surface 71, a Philanthropy Tank program launched with Emily Briceno and Jemma Curie to take action against plastic pollution and help keep our communities and oceans clean. 🌊

Since receiving Philanthropy Tank funding in 2018, Surface 71 has installed water refill stations in more than a dozen Palm Beach County schools and community centers, and helped recover hundreds of tons of trash from local beaches.

In this video, Marina shares how her Philanthropy Tank experience helped shape her journey and where it has taken her today. 💙

Have an idea that could make a difference in your community? Your idea could be next.

Applications are open to Palm Beach County students in grades 8–11 through October 15.

We love updates from our #palmbeach4h alumni and this one made our week! 💙💚🍀

Marina, a former officer on our Teen Leadership Council and co-creator of a #4H club at her high school (@dsoa_official) is thriving at the @uflorida as part of the @ufnavyrotc program.

Her Mom recently shared this incredible photo with her fellow ROTC members, and we couldn’t be more proud. Marina continues to embody the leadership, service, and dedication she demonstrated throughout her years in 4-H and she’s taking those skills to new heights.

Please join us in cheering her on as she leads, learns, and serves with the same heart and commitment she brought to our program. ⚓💙

#LagoonDrift has been studying the movement of marine debris in our local waters since 2017. This would not be possible without all of the organizations, nonprofits, schools and clubs that continue to help us raise awareness about marine debris and plastic pollution in our area. In celebration of #PlasticFreeJuly (@plasticfreejuly), we want to thank all of our partners and citizen scientists for doing their part. Every bit makes a difference!

Congratulations to Marina Barto, senior at A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, for committing to the University of Florida! Marina is the president of Surface71, a student-led nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about plastic pollution through education and community action. Her leadership has included organizing monthly beach cleanups, installing water refill stations in Palm Beach County schools, and creating plastic awareness sculptures using the plastic they collect from beaches.

She also serves as the Vice President of the Philanthropy Tank Club at Dreyfoos, where she has been able to educate students on Philanthropy Tank's mission and how they can get involved.

We have seen her growth as a CHANGEmaker since 2018 and are excited for her to continue making an impact in her college years!🎓🎉
