Shia called and said — “Wanna make a movie with @davidmamet?”

This is the result. Available directly to the people @ henryjohnsonmovie.com (link in BIO)

I remember Tony Hopkins saying somewhere, “Say yes to everything.” I hope you like it as much as we enjoyed making it.

From my archives ... Nightmute - Lipstick (rehearsal - April 17, 2013). I'm on the synths (Roland Jupiter 80!)

Back around early-mid 2013 for about a few months - @ficchistudio , @joshfahrenheit , @surkeathmoon , Shawn Bann (RIP), and I would get together around Downtown LA and rehearse the songs they all wrote prior to my involvement. Before showing up on the rehearsal day, Shawn and I would communicate via email through the week on ideas for the songs that could work on the keyboards. Those ideas were bounced over to Aaron, and depending if they both felt it could work, they would give me the greenlight to make it happen when we got together again. Sadly, the studio tracks of all these tracks I recorded on don't hold up well due to bad mixing and erroneous recording processes that had potential to highlight the work I did. It's also stuff not readily available over the internet anymore. Even worse, we never all performed together to play the song for a general audience.

BUT... To compensate for all these shortcomings because I wanted to showcase something, I wanted to share this audio clip of the song Lipstick I recorded from a rehearsal we all did since we all performed it LIVE. I think this was the best one I had and worth a bit of my own EQing work. I found the track to be interesting because I played a harsh distorted sound that would compliment Shawn's guitar on the second verse, then I transitioned to a swelling pad sound on the pre-chorus, and the arpeggiator would kick almost immediately and take over the entire chorus.

It's stuff like this that I miss when it comes to making music with others! This is also one of those things I wish we all did for a while longer. Oh well...

I was sitting in traffic recalling the VERY FIRST TIME I got together to play with @ficchistudio , @joshficchi , @surkeathmoon with listening to the rehearsal I recorded on 17 March 2013 in the studio space in Los Angeles. It was all carefully crafted with the email traffic between Shawn Bann (playing band liaison / spokesman through email) and me. Before I came, we went through ideas and some pre-audition stuff in our communication. Took about a month before we all finally met.

That's me on the keys. Sounds very tight for a first time. 🙂

I dedicate this picture to Shawn Bann's memory and to his family. His birthday would have been on March 1st. I wasn't sure if I should post this, but with the encouragement of Shawn's father, I got the go ahead to make it so.

There were some very odd things that happened when I decided to draw Shawn. Originally I picked a picture that was from around 10 years ago. During my progression, I got in a situation where a part of the paper had damage on the tip of his nose which needed shading. That damage was sadly and oddly very noticeable especially when I shaded. I tried to salvage the art, but everything I was doing was not saving it. They were damaging it further. In the end, I threw the art away. That experience while drawing on these recent things has not happened to me before. I attempted to draw the same picture again. Although I got much further, it didn't look right for some reason. I didn't know why. It looked "off." That art was also chucked.

After making two attempts on that picture, I tried a different one. I made two attempts on that as well. None of them turned out "good enough." Those were also thrown away. However, I wasn't ready to give up. I eventually settled for this picture that you are seeing that was posted on his linkedin. I got this done on the first try.

Despite the various attempts, I never once got very discouraged to give up on the idea to draw Shawn. In my opinion, I think Shawn was telling me that he wanted this finished picture of himself drawn and he did what he could to make me go this direction. It might be hard for some to believe, but for me, I like to think it's possible the people who have passed away still find ways to influence us to a certain direction. In this case, Shawn probably channeled a good degree of his energy and spirit to make me drift away from those other pictures because he probably didn't think those were good picks. If true, he was probably right. I actually like the detail on this one.

I miss him a lot. I feel this art serves as a wonderful tribute to his memory.
