4WDing is one of the best ways to experience Australia. Nothing beats finding hidden tracks, remote campsites and unforgettable views. But the further off the beaten track you go, the more responsibility you take for your own safety. As someone currently living and travelling through the Australian outback, I’ve seen just how quickly a great day outdoors can change. A few simple habits can make a huge difference: • Travel with another capable and well-equipped vehicle where possible. • Tell someone where you’re going, your planned route and when you expect to return. • Carry a physical map as a backup — don’t rely solely on phone reception or GPS. • Check weather conditions and road closures before leaving. • Make sure someone knows when to raise the alarm if they haven’t heard from you. The gear I never head into remote areas without includes: • A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) • A comprehensive first aid kit, including a pressure immobilisation snake bite bandage and emergency blanket • Recovery gear suited to the trip, such as a winch or recovery straps, damper, MaxTrax and shovel • A spare tyre, puncture repair kit, tyre compressor and pressure gauge • A UHF radio • Basic tools and the vehicle’s owner’s manual • Plenty of drinking water and extra food You don’t need the most expensive gear on the market. But if you can afford to head off-road, I believe investing in equipment improves your chances of getting home safely — or someone else’s — is just as important. This isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about giving people the confidence to get outside, explore further and do it safely. #beyondthebitumen #4WDingAustralia #OutdoorEducation #4wd #adventure

Teaching Wilderness First Aid courses with @survivefirstaid is incredibly professionally satisfying. Sharing in a learning experience with quality leaders who I get to witness grow in their confidence and competence means a lot to me. I couldn’t be more sure that their participants in experiences at a local, national and/or international destination are in safer hands as a result. We relaunched in SA only 12 months ago and we’re already selling out public courses with numerous private courses being run in between. I’m grateful. I’m excited about the journey to continue learning, evolving and supporting leaders in providing the best physical and psychological first aid, wherever there adventure may go.

I’ve shared some thoughts with @we_are_explorers on why everyone who works or plays in outdoor environments should consider undertaking a Wilderness First Aid course. I hope this resonates with guides, outdoor education teachers, adventurers, pre-hospital clinicians, instructors, search & rescue teams, rangers, club leaders, therapists, and anyone else who loves the outdoors! I’d love for you to have a read and let me know what you think! #WildernessFirstAid #RemoteAreaFirstAid #OutdoorFirstAid #FirstAid

Today Jay and I headed over on @searoadferries to Sorrento to catch up with our good friend Adam from @survivefirstaid who worked with @survivalfirstaid to donate these much needed first aid kits for our trip. One of the last and very important pieces of the puzzle. Massive thanks to Adam and Mike for making it happen!

Just wrapped up another @survivefirstaid Remote/Wilderness First Aid Course with a fantastic team of leaders from @bigheart_adventures! Made a few course adjustments to keep us out of Adelaide’s 40C heatwave, covered a lot of content and had the opportunity to run numerous scenarios relevant to the bushwalking community. I’ve got no doubt that every leader on the course has walked away with a greater understanding and preparedness for when/if things don’t go to plan, and hope they carry that new confidence and competence into their own unique styles of outdoor leadership. Thanks also to friends_of_belair_np for allowing us to utilise your volunteer centre - a perfect venue!
