YAMAN, which means “rich” in Filipino, took on a whole new meaning during #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth (in October) as we celebrated with an inaugural three-day festival in NYC. The festival featured a marketplace with unique Filipino treasures, a lively cultural dance, impactful workshops, and thought-provoking discussions led by trailblazers — a beautiful tribute to our rich heritage! 🇵🇭 @yamannyc @friendsofphilippinessocietyusa

APF Board members Nasar Qureshi and Susan Beer, along with APF Leadership Council member Aamina Awan-Khan and community member Mariya Ilyas, were guests of Layton Rahmatullah Benevolent Trust (LRBT USA) on Friday evening at the residence of the Pakistan Ambassador to the UN. With approximately 18 hospitals in Pakistan, they are saving sight and transforming the lives of 1,100 people per day via cataract surgery.

Receiving the 2024 Artist Advocate Award from New Yorkers for Culture and Arts brought everything full circle for me. Standing in the same city where I accepted my Emmy years ago, I was reminded of the moment I decided to use my art to make a real difference. A heartfelt thank you to @factress1, @joandfirestone, & Jacqueline Davis for a night I’ll never forget. And having the legendary @mishabaryshnikov123 congratulate me was truly special.

This award, given “For her writing and filmmaking, using creativity to address the systemic crime of human trafficking. For taking direct action to change laws, create international funds, and build an NGO that has served more than 20,000 women. For using art and creativity to help heal and uplift the voices of the women she works with,” recognizes my journey in using film and writing to fight human trafficking and support those affected.

Sharing this honor with fellow awardees @cahan_cora Justin Brannan, and @georgec.wolf, who each inspire with their commitment to the arts and governance, adds to the significance of this moment.

Lucy Sexton’s words resonate deeply: “Art and activism together create profound change.” Inspired to keep pushing boundaries!

I was humbled & grateful to have friends & family join me during my investiture into the Sovereign Military Order of Malta at St Patrick’s Cathedral. I look forward to continuing to actively participate in the Order’s ongoing humanitarian mission.

If you need some inspiration to overcome some business or personal challenges this book is for you. Glad to be the organization presenting this conversation with Bruce Jackson and Henry Louis Gates Jr. A portion of the book proceeds will benefit the Universal Hip Hop Museum.

"They say if you throw seeds in the air in Forbesganj, they will take root. Ruchira has taken root and spread like a Banyan tree across the globe;this time the stories in her soul have found roots in her art, in the paintings of her family garden." Prabhakar Kamble
My garden paintings are now online in a virtual viewing room. Do take a few minutes to watch. I hope to read your feedback about the art & the captions. Link in bio.
