Susan MacQueens "Terrain" and "Flight" series explore all the ways in which "one can lead a life" what we keep, what we mend, what we crumple. Her work reflects the deep way in which we choose life, not what life chooses for us. Susan is a philosophical artist, a seeker. This body of work feels ancient and new simultaneously. It feels like the terrain we have all walked on. It is the typographical map of humankind with the shared pits and sutures, darker shades and intense light. Artist Statement  Various papers, mostly mulberry are torn into shaggy edged shapes. They are backed with cheese cloth softly overlapping the edges. When brushed with glue they take on a lace like quality.  The surface of these shapes is enriched with thinly applied coats of plaster. Sometimes there are sprinklings of what might be found on the forest floor - seeds or crumbled dried thistle heads..Occasional splashings of black tea are the color.  These shapes are combined with others either layered or roughly stitched together. Is this a suture or the connected leaves of a strange book? Perhaps the viewer might see landscape references - the undulations and foldings become ridges and valleys or perhaps a place of shelter. Maybe. But either way the voice of the paper will be heard. Breaking the Surface On View till December 28th 128 South State Street Newtown Historic Borough

Join us December 13th for an Artist Discussion followed at 3pm with an Artist Reception. Saturday will be inspirational at ArtWRKD. Breaking the Surface: A Two-Person Exhibition Featuring Works by Margaret Koval and Susan MacQueen Friday December 5 – Sunday Dec 28, 2025 Reception: Saturday December 13 from 3:00 – 7:00 PM ArtWrkd Gallery, 128 South State Street, Newtown, PA 18940 ArtWRKD is pleased to announce Breaking the Surface, a two-person exhibition featuring new works by Margaret Koval and Susan MacQueen. This exhibition investigates the delicate interplay between the familiar and the unknowable, exploring how everyday spaces and materials can be simultaneously mysterious and intimate. Both artists challenge expectations while embracing ambiguity, materiality, and the compulsion to look closely. Each transforms familiar substances into forms that question perception. Koval manipulates paint and linen to depict public spaces that are both recognizable and subtly off-kilter, while the paintings’ physical presence creates an uncanny bridge to other media. MacQueen reshapes paper, cloth, and plaster into delicate, hybrid objects that she says, “stretch the garment of possibilities.” Both artists invite viewers to engage tactilely and attentively with the work. Themes of ambiguity, instability, and the poetics of surface bind the exhibition together. Susan MacQueen: Stretching Possibilities To create her mixed-media works, MacQueen tears papers into shaggy-edged shapes, often backed with cheesecloth that softly overlaps the edges. When brushed with glue, the forms acquire a lace-like quality, enriched by thin coats of plaster and occasionally accented with seeds, dried thistle, or splashes of black tea. Margaret Koval: Disrupting Everyday Spaces Koval’s paintings typically show recognizable elements of America’s built environments—such as architecture, infrastructure, or street features —and renders them both unfamiliar and faintly exotic. Her imagery often borrows from surveillance photography. The high vantage points, obscured sight lines, and bright security lighting all work to heighten narrative uncertainty.
