Sushi Horiuchi took me back to my favorite sushi counter in Japan for a few hours. Chef Hori, Chef Anna, and Jess, the sommelier, deliver an exceptional omakase experience with an added touch of Southern hospitality. The food was incredible, featuring some of the best bites we’ve ever had, and sake and wine pairings were equally impressive. We had so much fun during our first Sushi Horiuchi experience.

We were served 21 courses, each prepared and presented with intention and precision. If I had to narrow it down to my top three bites (plus a bonus), they would be:

1. Takamori beef tenderloin with shiitake mushroom au jus and Amela tomato. I genuinely think this bite of wagyu might be the best piece of meat I’ve ever had. It melted instantly, felt surprisingly light, and was cooked to absolute perfection. The cow we had was specifically fed sake mash from dassai brewery in Japan.
2. Akamutsu binchotan. Also known as “white toro,” this piece of fish was incredibly fresh and buttery. Chef Hori seared it with hot charcoal, adding the perfect touch of char. 10/10.
3. Toro with Bubu cracker and dashi vinaigrette. I’ve never had toro prepared quite like this. The cracker added a beautiful crunch while letting the rich, buttery flavor of the tuna shine.
Bonus: Shizuoka musk melon. This melon has been living rent-free in my mind ever since I tried it. It is so sweet and truely just melted in my mouth.

There were so many other standout bites that made this meal feel so special and worth every moment. The pairings and progression of courses were thoughtfully curated, and the entire team created an atmosphere that felt both welcoming and warm.

One of the things I love most about omakase is how it celebrates seasonality, allowing the chefs to showcase the freshest fish and ingredients at their peak. This means that the menu is always changing and no two days will be the same. Dining at Sushi Horiuchi was especially memorable as we celebrated the restaurant’s new Michelin recognition and the announcement of Jess’s Michelin sommelier award. Until next time!

A big moment and well-deserved applause for Jessica Cano (@j_canoo), who received @michelinguide’s 2026 Special Sommelier Award this morning. She’s responsible for shepherding guests through our incredible sake pairings with every service, heightening the experience in ways that remind everyone you can’t find this kind of thing anywhere else.

We also owe it to Ben Wendt, our Beverage Director, for his guidance, working together with Jessica to develop an incomparable list of sake allocations, many of which are entirely unique to @sushihoriuchi.

Jessica’s storytelling and hospitality are unmatched, and it’s of no surprise her passion for making every guest feel at home is felt at every seat in the room. We are endlessly proud to have her on our team.

🚨 Houston didn’t get a new Michelin star in 2026, but there’s still plenty to celebrate.

All 6 Houston-area Michelin-starred restaurants retained their stars:

We’ve been doing Southern Smoke Festival for years and each and every time, it continues to be a privilege to serve our community.

This year, knowing how hard it is to get one of our usual reservations, we brought a mini version of @sushihoriuchi’s omakase to the Lexus VIP space for guests who were quick enough to grab seats through @resy. We did our best to share this moment with as many of you as possible, so we hope everyone who joined got to appreciate a special experience that ultimately benefits this incredible cause for our industry.

@southernsmokefoundation is a Houston nonprofit founded by our very good friends, Chef @cshepherd13 and @htownlindseybrown. They work tirelessly with their team around the clock and throughout the entire year, raising funds to provide emergency financial assistance to food and beverage workers facing crises such as medical emergencies, natural disasters, or sudden loss of income.

Taking care of our own is what it’s all about and we know the work doesn’t stop here. It’s about all the moments of care for each other in between and we hope to keep paying it forward.

One of our recent additions to the omakase menu is Unagi Oshizushi, made with sweet, smoky grilled unagi layered over vinegared rice.

Oshizushi originated in Osaka during the Edo period, when fish and rice were pressed together in oshibako (wooden molds) to preserve and season them before quick fermentation techniques made sushi more portable.

Unlike the hand formed nigiri of Tokyo, this style reflects Kansai region traditions, where layered ingredients like mackerel, shrimp, or unagi are compressed into neat rectangular blocks. It remains a signature of Osaka cuisine today, often served at festivals and formal occasions.

Here, you’ll get to enjoy a bit of oshizushi’s meaningful evolution and technique in this little Houston space. And of course, we’ll wrap nori around each piece for every guest to add another touch of umami and texture.
