🌿 DigitalFUTURES 2026 Workshop Series｜Artificial Co-Habitat: Designing 3D-Printed Ecologies through Generative AI

The workshop “Artificial Co-Habitat: Designing 3D-Printed Ecologies through Generative AI” concluded successfully under the guidance of tutors and teaching team members from SUSTech @sustechsz , HKU @hkuarchitecture , and UCL @ucl , together with 14 participants.

Centered on the idea of co-habitat, the workshop investigated how architectural systems can foster new relationships among microclimates, vegetation, and microbial ecologies. Rather than treating AI as a form-making shortcut, the workshop positioned it as a decision-support system for comparing design alternatives through ecological performance, geometric behaviour, and fabrication constraints.

🌱 The final outcomes included modular seagrass restoration supports, air-purifying bioreceptive wall systems, marine bio-colonization facade panels, and biophilic surface prototypes, revealing the multi-scalar potential of environmentally responsive geometry and clay 3D-printed green infrastructure.

⬅️Just a few years ago, many of us had no clear picture of what AI would be able to do now.

✅Today, it is reshaping how we work, learn, and respond to global challenges.

⁉️ If this is where we are now, the real question is: what comes next?

📍I had the honor to contribute to these conversations at the APEC Shenzhen Advancing with AI Conference, held 29–30 June 2026 at the Southern University of Science and Technology @sustechsz ,Shenzhen, China.

🤍 The discussions centered on AI’s opportunities, its limitations, and the urgent need for responsible, ethical, and human-centered innovation to guide its future.

🤍I also shared insights from my public health research, particularly how AI supported my research work.

🏆 I am deeply honored that my work received both the OUTSTANDING POSTER AWARD and recognition as an OUTSTANDING PAPER.

But beyond the awards, what stays with me most is the purpose behind the work:

✅ That policymakers may strengthen and update AI and disease surveillance regulations
✅ That a funder may see value in investing in AI-enabled airport health systems in East Africa
✅ That a young student may feel inspired to continue building on this work

Because research is not just about publication or recognition, it is about real-world impact, and the lives it can shape & save beyond the page.

As we continue to grow our global design community, we’re proud to introduce the organizations that joined ICoD in the 2024–2026 term.

🎉 A warm welcome to the School of Design at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) joining us from Shenzhen, China.
Established in 2020, the School of Design at SUSTech brings together an international and multidisciplinary faculty, working across boundaries between academia, industry, and society. Located at the heart of Shenzhen’s dynamic innovation ecosystem, the School offers bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programmes connecting cutting-edge research with real-world design practice.

Our new science on the status of Ugandas 🇺🇬 lions, leopards and hyenas is out today! To my friends on here who are interested in carnivore science and lions in particular, our survey used 232 camera trap locations, teams of scientists that drove 26 000 km and called lions using audio calls in 80 locations to paint a picture of how these animals are doing across the country. Our results paint some hope for lions in Murchison Falls where we estimate ~240 lions still occupy some 3200 km2 of land despite significant pressure from oil and snaring. In Queen Elizabeth the situation is more dire with about 40 lions left in the park (that’s nearly 50% decline in 5 years), while in Kidepo lions are at ground zero with <20 animals left. Hyenas and leopards appear to be faring far better especially in Murchison Falls. The biggest part of our work has been how many people and organisations we managed to bring in to help us do data collection and analysis. Thanks to a few of them here @0_r1n @atubosco00 @thegentle_indifference @volcanoes_safaris @ugwildlife @dinal_samarasinghe @siemiatkowskifoundation @ninasiemiatkowski @wildnetorg @lionrecovery @thewanderingconservationist @kzjjames @kerenspereira @solaristrailcam @griffithuniversity @thenamibianwanderer @obryan.wildlife @apoka_safari_lodge @mihingolodge @ralphschenkug @arjun_gopalaswamy @mnsubuga6 @nauflagstaff @sustechsz @_snarestowaresinitiative @makomanation

Always fun to catch up with colleagues and friends - Prof Jane Goodyer - Dean of @lassondeschool and Prof. Zhenghe Xu - former Dean of Engineering @sustechsz - learning from each other about best practices for experiential learning in engineering - so many common challenges esp around rapidly changing fields and student interest and mapping to industry needs. It’s great to be part of the global engineering community and seeing the role @uoftengineering plays

On Friday April 19, 2024, GLOBE had the pleasure of meeting with Professor Li from our partner, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in China.

In the Fall 2023 semester, GLOBE began its student exchange program where SUSTech Material Science and Engineering students joined the GLOBE Visiting Student Program. Meet Zhongzheng Mao, who joined GLOBE in the Fall 2023 semester and Zixin Zhang, who joined GLOBE this Spring 2024 semester.

Congratulations to both Zhongzheng and Zixin who are one week away from completing GLOBE’s Visiting Student Program! 🥳🎓

We look forward to meeting the future SUSTech students joining our program!

On Tuesday April 30, 2024, GLOBE held its annual Spring Completion Ceremony to honor our GLOBE Visiting Students. This year there were a total of 123 GLOBE Visiting Students who have completed our program for the Spring 2024 semester. This cohort of students came from our partner colleges in China, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and India.

There was a full house to commemorate our departing GLOBE Visiting Students and all of their successes. We are extremely grateful and proud of the Spring cohort of graduates and we wish them much success in their future! 💙💛
