Mom and I had the privilege of walking Julia “Mopsey” Miller home last night. She spent her last bit of time on earth listening to hymns and a voice message from my brother, her beloved grandson, who is deployed in Germany but was able to be by her side virtually. No words were left unsaid, and she was ready to go home….a comfort to us all. She suffered unimaginable loss in her lifetime, surviving all of her children, but she loved fiercely and self sacrificially despite it all. She will be remembered for her love of cooking, her devotion to the Florida State Seminoles (and her son, my stepdad, Fred “the head”), her contagious laugh, backyard baseball games, but mostly for her loving kindness and the tremendous pride she had in her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was the best part of the Miller family, and we bid her farewell knowing she’s reunited with her babies and fully healed and whole. Thank you to the special people at @bigbendhospice compassionate care wing at TMH for helping her go home with comfort and dignity. Well done, Mopsey. We love you and we will see you soon.

Motherhood is such a wild experience. We’re all just these flawed humans out here working our tails off to give our tiny beings every single good thing we want for them. Each generation of mom takes bits of her experience and leaves others, hoping that the childhood she gives her children leaves them trauma-free, thriving, stable, healthy….with all of the good she ever had and none of the bad.
We’re all just out here figuring it out as we go, praying we’re doing more good than damage, wondering how our kids will remember these years and what they’ll say they’ll want to leave behind when they get their turn to be parents.
To hold it all is heavy. But to look back at your little babies who are now almost grown and to see that you didn’t totally mess the whole thing up and you actually created some real decent people and you all seem like you’re going to be okay….thats when it’s really good.
So good job moms! You’re doing great! It turns out you’ve really done a good job despite all the non organic processed food and that time you yelled at everyone to shut up in the car. Turns out they see your heart and your effort and your sincerity and your work and one day….someday….theyll be well adjusted, grateful adults who’ll tell you how much they appreciate it all! (Just maybe not today so I’ll say it for them)
Happy Mother’s Day to @copperdockgirl and all the other mommas out there killin it!

So much fun celebrating mom’s 70th with a 70’s themed disco bonanza! Tequila sunrises, disco balls, bell bottoms, and more! It was a night to remember!

I missed my mom’s 70th birthday…in fact, she was cleaning my house and watching my kid for me while I worked when I realized I’d forgotten to tell her happy birthday. Don’t get me wrong….we are prepping to celebrate her BIG this weekend, but in all of the hustle and bustle I forgot to celebrate her on the actual day of her birth. I’ve been going through old photos in preparation for her party and it’s been so fun to think about everything she’s done with her life. She’s overcome so much to become the person she is. Coming from nothing, working her skinny butt off, out working everyone around her, no college education, rocking single mommin’, and now she’s deputy CFO of the state of Florida with every senator and CFO singing her praises. She’s the hardest working person I know. She’s loyal and feisty, smart as a tack and truthful. She has high expectations, but none that she doesn’t herself also adhere to. She’s up before everyone and she’s done day’s work before most people’s feet hit the floor. She made me wear pantyhose, close-toed shoes and below-the-knee skirts to my first job at 15 (with much opposition) and she taught me the value of showing up early and going above and beyond. I’ve never once called when she didn’t answer. I’ve never once told her something where she didn’t believe and back me 100%. I’ve never once felt like I couldn’t rely on her for help, but I’ve always felt empowered to try to take things on myself because she was my example. I’ve felt strong and powerful and confident and capable because she taught me to be that. If I was only mediocre, I had no idea because she told me I was great and when Susan tells you something you just know it to be true. Happy birthday to this force of nature. Can’t wait to celebrate this weekend!
