ARS ELECTRONICA – Campus Award Nomination

We are happy to announce that the research cluster ‘Evidentiary Syntheses’ is nominated for the Ars Electronica Campus Award. ‘Evidentiary Syntheses’ is a dialogue of two approaches towards methods of reconstruction, making spatial configurations and events legible: ‘Cementing The Occupation: Pipelines of Bureautic Dispossession’ and ‘Situated Sound Composite: Drone Scape’.
The Ars Electronica Campus Award recognizes the most outstanding project presented within the Campus Exhibition and we’ll be crossing our fingers for them!
The award ceremony will take place on Sep 12th, 17:30 – 19:00.

Cementing The Occupation: Pipelines of Bureautic Dispossession
by Suzan Ela Hanow, Henrik Palmer, Andrii Tinkow, Aris Wiegand, Linus Ziegler

Pipelines of Bureaucratic Dispossession presents the two methods currently used by the occupying Russian power in temporarily occupied Donetsk, Ukraine. Both pipelines provide a veneer of legality to blatant war crimes, violating multiple international laws. All data presented were scraped from official Russian government websites.
This project is one portion of the research from our transnational working group between New Practice in Art and Technology, the Center for Urban History in Lviv, the Invisible University for Ukraine, and Bard College Berlin. The project combines open-source human rights investigation with local wartime documentation. The main outcome is a bi-national human rights report that exposes forced displacement and unlawful reconstruction in Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine, which will be published in December 2026.

This project emerged from the cooperation with the Digital Verification Corps (DVC) of Amnesty International’s global network dedicated to the verification and analysis of digital evidence of human rights abuses. Since its founding in 2016, the DVC has contributed to more than one hundred investigations across ninety countries.

The idea of a shoot like this has been lingering around for a long time. Number 5 feels like a modern renaissance. I am happy with these pictures and also this post. I wish everybody this kind of satisfaction with their work. Thank you to everybody involved in this project.

ARS ELECTRONICA 2025 - Recap of projects 4-6

‘Bring on the Chaos’ @ Ars Electronica 2025
For this year’s ARS ELECTRONICA 16 students of Design & Computation curated the exhibition ‘Bring on the Chaos’ and presented six projects that dealt with hidden patterns, future myths, cultural models, policing tactics, soft technologies and quantum music:

Operational Choreography
Natalya Bashnyak, Harun Ćurak, Otto Ostermann
Police forces from diverse socio-geographical contexts convene in overlapping networks to exchange on enforcement strategies. These collaborations frequently pass under the radar, and the content circulated is difficult to trace.
Aligned with the accelerating militarization of police, these efforts contribute to the global codification of a shared methodology of violence. By tracing patterns across footage from diverse forces, this work gestures toward a taxonomy of common policing tactics.

Approaching Models of Culture: SWAG
Pierre-Louis Suckrow, Suzan Hanow
This installation presents the conceptual framework established in a research project in which reframing computational intelligence from models of intelligence to models of culture allowed to investigate how a specific subculture (SWAG) is captured and modeled in these current models.
Through the usage of concepts from information aesthetics, archaeology, media theory and computer science, a system to measure the SWAG was devised aswell as an interactive probing tool to translate an understanding of how data-driven systems reflect and reduce cultural memory into statistical patterns.

Soft Interface
Lilu Herlambang, Franz Hagen, Hong Anh Pham, Chia-Chi Chen
Soft Interface imagines technology becoming soft, warm, and alive. Screens melt into fabrics, keyboards transform into tactile textiles, devices respond to human touch. Prototypes explore emotional intelligence, digital materiality, and a world of organic interaction—blurring boundaries until technology feels less like a tool and more like a part of us.
