Six years ago, several months into the pandemic, Suzanne and I decided to cope with the horrors by writing a romantic comedy. The kind we love. The kind we desperately need. What if, we wondered, a young couple’s engagement went sideways when their parents start dating? That would be kind of funny, right?

From that premise grew a very special story called Otherwise Engaged.

And from that script, the most passionate and talented team I could have asked for. A dedicated army of producers, friends and artists whom I am deeply grateful for.

But it all started with my friend. Long days on the famously terrible couch in the sweltering shoebox apartment. Then on the better couch in the slightly less sweltering apartment. Then on Zoom in Japan at one point, which was weird. Dreaming. Studying. Excavating. Wandering. But more than anything, laughing. I haven’t laughed as hard as I did working on this script. That laughter taught me more than I can explain. And honestly reminded me why we’re here.

So to read the announcement this weekend was amazing and surreal. We have a road ahead, but I feel incredibly proud and deeply excited to see this project find its way. But mostly I feel lucky. Lucky to spend time with stories. Lucky to have collaborators like this. Lucky to see these brilliant actors come aboard. Lucky to laugh. Laugh, laugh, laugh.
