The Mom Line

“That you survive any of these lines is a pleasant surprise,” Ellen Smoothy says to her son Sam. Ellen is an experienced alpinist who introduced her children to her love of the mountains at a young age. Sam is a former Freeride World Tour competitor and TGR star who has admittedly taken that passion to new heights. He is currently on a quest to ski all 24 of New Zealand’s 3,000-meter peaks. In The Mom Line, Sam and Ellen return to the mountains together for an ascent and ski of 3,109-meter Elie de Beaumont. While on their quest, mother and son have deep conversations on the inherent risk of mountain travel and the precarious life-path Sam has chosen—and that Ellen introduced him to. Would she put the genie back in the bottle? “You could be quite radical as a librarian,” Ellen quips. Read more in the 2025 Powder Magazine Photo Annual. Meet the crew!

Sarah grew up ski racing on the East Coast before moving out West to chase big lines and deep powder. As a Mammoth Lakes resident of nine years and a backcountry enthusiast, Sarah has an in-depth knowledge of local skiing and snowpack. Often chasing the snow, she has spent multiple seasons in the southern hemisphere in Argentina, Chile and New Zealand. As both a ski instructor and ski patroller, she has worked hard developing her well-rounded skill set and her smooth, stylish skiing. Sarah is excited for a great season of high quality pow turns with the team as a guide & cat operator for her first season with HSS.

We have worked with Sarah for two seasons ski patrolling in New Zealand and are stoked to work with her on her home turf.

Quite a lovely day with @outhikingwithtiare and @sv0ss. First time into this area and it definitely didn’t disappoint. Lots of nakey swims and lots of twizzlers at Cecile, Iceberg, and Ediza lake // 📸: @outhikingwithtiare, check her out! She is so talented.
