A workshop, an evening discussion and and artistic intervention brought together artists, activists, researchers, and participanting students to critically engage with colonial memory culture through artistic and digital practices.

Centered around the Kolonialstein near the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, the project explored how augmented reality and 3D technologies can challenge dominant historical narratives, activate hidden histories, and create collective forms of remembrance in public space. Through discussions, contextual research, artistic experimentation, and a collective AR intervention, the workshop opened important conversations around memory politics, visibility, power structures, and decolonial futures.

Special thanks to Mikala Hyldig Dal for joining us and Tania Kolbe, Angelika Waniek, Julia Kurz from AG Postkolonial, Re-Telling Doaa, and UmRäumen e.V. for this great cooperation! <3

.·:*¨𝕌𝕟𝕝𝕖𝕒𝕣𝕟𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕄𝕠𝕟𝕦𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕥𝕒𝕝𝕚𝕥𝕪¨*:·. (How) can digital interventions re-contextualise colonial and nationalist monuments?

Public Discussion, Tuesday, 19.05.2026, 18:00, HGB Room 2.34

The evening event invites you to an open, collective discussion on how to deal with colonial and nationalist monuments in public spaces in Leipzig. The starting point is the colonial stone and the question of how digital technologies, in particular augmented reality and 3D practices, can be used to irritate, expand or retell dominant historical narratives.
Artists, researchers and activists will contribute short impulses that open up perspectives on memory politics, visibility, power structures and decolonial (digital) practices.

Participants: Sven Bergelt, Mikala Hyldig Dal, Eliza Goldox, Tania Kolbe (AG Postkolonial / Re-Telling Doaa), Julia Kurz (Umräumen e.V.), and Angelika Waniek.

This will be followed by a joint exchange with the audience, in which the contributions will be considered further, scrutinised and linked with each other. The event understands monuments as contested and changeable archives. Part of the workshop „Unlearning Monumentality“ with an AR workshop (19-20 May) „From Stone to Story: AR as Decolonial Practice in Public Space“.
