Many years ago, I got a Master of Arts in Education degree. Why? Don't ask. I can assure you that it wasn't because I was dying to become a teacher or because I was looking for an easy way to blow $48,000. The degree never proved... professionally useful, but I did learn a thing or two that helped me be a better father and human being.

One of the things I was taught was about memorable learning experiences, which is the not-very-shocking idea that things really sink into a person's brain if they're experienced in a manner that is unorthodox, jarring, or impactful.

Some lessons learned have to hit us in the pocketbook for them to really make a dent.

Since I bought Bayliss, I was having issues. He idled rough, intermittently, wouldn't start, intermittently, was doing all kinds of weird things; intermittently which anybody who knows anything about cars will tell you that "intermittent" issues are the worst, because they're fleeting and unpredictable and they never flare up at the mechanic.

Well, I started throwing parts at the car: new coil, new distributor, new starter motor. Bayliss spent 43 absurd days at the mechanic, who theorized that corroded wiring was the culprit. I can't even talk about what it cost.

The problem was never fixed, and I was too upset to bring him back there. But I did what I should have done at the beginning, reach out to a vintage 'yota fiend. Steven W answered my DM immediately and he did something the mechanic didn't; he really listened to everything I was reporting about the issue, and he knew, with near certainty, it was the coolant temperature sensor.

A $10 part, that I replaced myself in under three minutes.

This 35-year-old car is running like new, starts every time, no matter how long it's parked, and has get-up-and-go (for a 2.0, that is) that I hadn't previously experienced.

I am so grateful to Steven, and it was surely a memorable learning experience for me. I can ask for help and, as a suicide awareness advocate, I should know and practice that. Look for the helpers; they're everywhere.
