In late summer of 1980, when I was starting 11th grade, I left the high school I had been attending to enroll in a half-day studio arts program called Art Center. The program was at another high school not terribly far from my own, but I didn’t know anyone there. Another kid in the program, Joe Lally, was kind enough to ease my transition. He was also kind enough to explain the music my classmates were allowed to play as they worked. It was all stuff I had never heard before. I remember one mixtape that got a lot of played to death had some songs that I love to this day (though I didn’t necessarily like them at first).

Joe is going to be in Philadelphia on Friday, September 18th, playing with Jerry Busher and Yanni Papadopoulos (another old friend and musical guide) at Khyber Pass Pub with the wonderful Sun Within. Applied Knowledge is going to open the show, so I’ll get a chance to thank Joe for helping to introduce me to a new world of music.

In anticipation of that show, over the next few days I’ll share some songs from that mixtape. First up: “Robot” by Plastics.

New @sunwithinband singles in the distro shop! ☀️ Equal parts post-hardcore, math rock, and raw power pop, the Philadelphia trio’s punk, emo, and experimental-noise pedigrees stretch back decades. Another stellar 7” from @exoticfeverreecords

The name “Sun Within” derives from a translation of the sacred Gayatri Mantra, invoking protection from darkness and the belief that the light within each of us can elevate the broader community.

Sun Within, Philadelphia hellions with a new 7" out, performing a barnburner of a song at the Pocket last night that they said was called "Compassion Stickup" or something along those lines — I should have taken notes!
