i took a break from socials but there are so many things going on this month i need you to know about! swipe to learn more! there are still spots in this awesome afterschool program and this week is SOUND BASED. kids will record and mash up sounds and build an environment of sound and think a lot about what it means to listen! it runs tues, weds & thurs from 3:30-5:30 at @littleanimalsspace downtown. i’ll be there thursday with a bunch of record players, sound effect records and cassettes. last minute sign ups are a-ok! come on! i am very excited to put another “housecat and son” workshop on the books. @henryscardstore is invaluable in helping me develop these projects even if he gets a little shy when it comes time to teach. housecat & son workshops are ideal for a 1:1 activity with your kiddo but older kids will do fine on their own for this one. we will make sock puppet portraits of people in our lives. these make amazing gifts and are such a fun collaboration! sign up with @remixitavl so i know how many socks to bring! i am obsessed with this book right now. it’s part of a materials study i have been working on in mega slow motion for about a year now in service of a personal grief project. looking forward to experimenting with paints, inks, and dyes from marigolds! i am so bummed that the “build to burn” workshop with @torchedavl won’t run this weekend after all, but we are planning for a session in february. i am working through the steps myself right now and hope to run a limited workshop on just the art part this fall so stay tuned. the basic idea is to make some cathartic art (pictured above), then burn it in your own personal dumpster fire, and then use those ashes to make an ink and pull a monoprint using that ink. transformation baby! i had SO MUCH FUN at the art walk in my little sensory deprivation womb of a studio doing private tarot readings and stepping out at the end for the @swannatopia spider dance and watching a few of the judgement sessions by @_warmearthworm_ i was honored and touched and a little teary to receive this judgement at the end of the night. i love these @lamplightavl studio mates and the amazing things we pull off toget

We’re looking forward to seeing you on FRIDAY for the East-West Asheville Fall Art Walk! At Lamplight Studios, the evening will take inspiration from the season with a spooky harvest theme, with creative activities and experiences inside and out. @swannatopia returns to transform the Lamplight yard with outdoor décor for the event. At 7:00 @crow_rowlette will perform music on the porch. Lamplight resident @elizabeth_ivey_artworks will present a selection of work from her September Residency at Lamplight’s residency space at 821 Haywood Road. Decorated pumpkins can be brought to a judging booth to receive a ribbon prize. Jess Spear of @housecatavl will offer tarot readings in her studio (link to book in our profile!). @impracticalinstruments incredible, immersive installation will be in the basement space. Alison Antaramian (@pee_paws ) and Swannatopia will close the evening out with a short dance performance that everyone is invited to join.🕸️ Elsewhere along the walk, @harvestrecordsavl will host an exhibition of work by Sally Anne Morgan. @yourlocalhaunt will create a family-friendly haunted experience inspired by classic homemade Halloween traditions, with creepy sensory elements and playful surprises. @nicetimeglass will invite the public into its studio to watch live glassblowing. @makenoisemusic will host a pre-Halloween bash where YOU play the songs of a ghost, create the sounds of a haunted house and get your photo with a skeleton. @woodland.tattoo will offer small flash tattoos alongside a temporary tattoo table, inviting both adults and kids to see inside the studio and adorn themselves with real or pretend body art. @bagatellebooks will again host music while remaining open for visitors to browse the shop. @remixitavl will host an open-ended upcycled craft activity using donated materials, and @eikon_avl will showcase work by several local artists. @periodnirvanaavl will invite guests to share words or doodles about their first period for a community display in the store. @hotstufftattoo will open its doors for visitors to browse artist portfolios and learn more about the studio’s work. @storyparloravl will offer a glimpse into its listening roo

Save the date for 9/19 (End of) Summer Soiree 12-3 at Old Town District in Black Mountain Food / Drink / Crafts / Storytelling / DJ / Open Mic Free but donations welcome! Celebrate 11 years of building community through the arts This fun, annual event, goes to a new community in our region each year, allowing us to do what we do best, which is bringing creativity and arts directly to the people of Western North Carolina. This year we are focusing on our home base, Swannanoa Valley, and because communities are collective, with lots of different folks adding their special flair, we will be doing it in partnership with our (individual and institutional) friends and neighbors in Black Mountain and Swannanoa. Follow us over the coming weeks as we spotlight these amazing businesses, nonprofits and individuals who make our area special, and join us on 9/19 for a day of all-ages fun celebrating the arts as an integral part of every community. @oldtowndistrictbmt @che_fai_black_mountain @chifferobeblackmountain @swannatopia @blackmountainlibrary @swannanoa_sga @swannanoacommunitiestogether @littlefarmnc And huge thanks to our event sponsors: @mosaicrealtyavl @kathleencookavl @mastgeneralstore and DJ @deejay_delight Check out our bio for links to more information about our event and to donate! #celebratethearts #artsbuildcommunity #swannanoavalley #valleystrong #familyfun

We'd like to extend a huge thank-you to Swannatopia for hosting yesterday's Waggle Workshop, which was BEE-yond amazing! With live accompaniment from Sally Anne Morgan, the Swannatopians led a "NOW TIME" hexagon dance inspired by the "waggle dance," a primary way that bees communicate with each other in their hives. Participants dressed up in handmade bee costumes, putting collage in motion as they followed steps like "bums toward the sun," "swing your bestie" and "fly home"! Just like the legendary costume parties at BMC, this event brought movement, laughter, and community connection into our space. Thank you to everyone who came out to participate in the workshop! There are just two weeks left to see the Black Mountain COLL(A)GE exhibition, and we have one more summer program in store! Between August 20th and August 27th, Drones in the Garden will be installing a hanging botanical installation at BMCM+AC, so drop in anytime during the installation window to see the piece slowly come together. The installation will culminate in an evening performance Thursday, August 27th. We hope to see you there!
