Last week, the animation world gathered in Annecy for Europe’s premier animation festival, and we were proud to see Verve clients help drive many of the biggest announcements, premieres and conversations. Among the highlights:

• DreamWorks previewed FORGOTTEN ISLAND, starring LIZA SOBERANO, which is already generating early Oscar buzz, while also announcing DONKEY, the newest film in the SHREK universe, directed by CHARLIE BEAN.

• Warner Bros. Pictures Animation highlighted OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!, co-directed by JILL CULTON and Jon M. Chu, as a centerpiece of its upcoming slate. The film is slated for release on March 17, 2028.

• Netflix debuted a first look at GHOSTBUSTERS: NIGHT SHIFT, with ELLIOTT KALAN serving as executive producer and showrunner, and highlighted Season 2 of BLUE EYE SAMURAI, from supervising director and producer JANE WU.

• Adult Swim screened CHIP JOINS A CULT in competition, directed by MADDIE BREWER.

• Disney+/Hulu unveiled a new look at Season 15 of KING OF THE HILL, a priority animation series that has SAM JOHNSON and SAM FISHELL in key producing roles.

Yooooooooo, it’s an absolute honor to have been nominated for @televisionacad This show was very special to all of us who worked on it, so fun finding the darkest laughs all over the underworld. It was such a special tone, filled with death, magic and sex but also exhibited tremendous heart which always impressed me. The cast was so funny together, the set was always an incredible experience. Love to feel the love 🧛🏻❤️🦇

FYC! @theshadowsfx, episode 602, Headhunting. The LAB set!!

I loved designing this set and working so closely with all our teams to bring the magic to life. So much texture and detail and thought went into this space. We built a huge water tank, the monster slab table, a gimbled elevator piece, 18’ tall coils, modular shelving, custom lighting and so many partial experiments’ all into a multilevel set that we all enjoyed making. It was a true labor of love and I’m really proud of this one.

Special shout outs to our amazing construction @ted905 ,the best scenic artist in all of the land @jenwardlepoops , my dear pal @kerriwylie who is THE BEST set decorator and to our beloved art directors @hayleymisaacs and @imustcontrol. Also umm @bevancrothers ,who is a magical DP and his brain and heart are so entangled into and allover all of this.

Our writers are the best. The directors are magical storytellers and I’m just a mush ball for it all.

I miss this show heaps, so perhaps I’ll keep making these posts to relive the juiciness of it all!!

Thank you for the love and the award last night @adg800. Sadly I didn’t make it to LA to be the show but the lovely @jenwardlepoops and @romy_bee went to represent our show and the art dept team and for that I am grateful. A pat on the back like this is beyond lovely. But the real goodness comes from doing the actual work with an insanely talented cast, crew, writers and producers. I love @theshadowsfx and am glad others do too. Congrats all yall. You know who you are. LFG 🚀🚀🚀

Season 6 @theshadowsfx Laszlo’s lab, a closer look at the production design. For your consideration @adg800.

When I first read about this set, it appeared as a one line mention in an early script for the season. I think it referred to it as “a small basement lab set up”. I ended up pitching something much bigger, thinking there was no way it would be approved and everyone kind of loved the concept. Paul Simms said they would write more scenes into the lab to justify a bigger build. And off we went. It ended up being a three level set with heaps of texture and custom everything. We put in a gimbled elevator, a giant water tank, a modular open shelf and pass through piece, a custom monster slab table with hydraulics, a wrap around mezzanine walkway (inspired by historical surgery theatres), a spiral stair, custom sconces and chandelier lighting, a 14’ tall wall of recycled and made cabinetry, a marble tile clad wet area, heaps of in house designed and hand drawn schematics and some insanely creepy and cool lab experiments.

Nothing about this build was simple and everything was laboured over with so much care and love. I drove our amazing decorator @kerriwylie nuts with requests for so many odd ball details and worked closely with our incredible scenic artist @jenwardlepoops to make sure the tones and textures were right. @ted905 our construction coordinator bent over backwards to build a solid and detailed set that stood up to the many effects and stunts that it housed. Each of these department heads and their teams KILLED it.

I loved the process of bringing this set to life and will forever hold dear the chance to collaborate with our shows producers, directors, set designers, set dressers, special effects, graphics and stunt teams as well as the magical DP @bevancrothers to pull off what we did in there!

But as a holiday gift to all who love this show, I’m going to be sharing some more of what went into the production design of season 6 in the coming days as I am insanely proud of what we all pulled off. If you haven’t watched the finale episode of What We Do in the Shadows please don’t scroll.

But enough of you have to enjoy some more BTS. Doing as shot perfect as we could get them send ups was a challenge, shooting real film and trying to nail the language of each with only one extra day to shoot took extraordinary planning with my DP @bevancrothers — and meant we had to pull off a shadows record to make time — filming a 16 page day in the house. Only possible with cast and crew at the absolute tippy top of their game. Someday I will release the storyboards. They are epic.
