They say there’s very few moments in life that you know in that moment that you’ll remember forever. From getting engaged, to saying “I do,” to the time your kid takes their first steps… to so many other amazing proud parent moments.
But this moment is like no other. At this years YIG assembly I had the pleasure of putting on the honor chords for a group of kids that I had for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. As they talked and help the students from my current school- I couldn’t have been more proud. As their speeches went on and they handed the torch to the next generation… they all reflected on how far they had come from silly bills in their Middle School classroom to now!
As I cried happy tears on the balcony looking down… they had a moment in store that I did not expect.. a standing ovation. 👏🏼
This moment isnt just for me… this moment shows how when teachers go above and beyond… losing planning periods, nights away after being on a long bus ride, or endless speech editing… it pays off in creating a future generation that is going to leave each room better than when they walked in. #yig #youthingovernment #ymcayig

YMCA Youth Advocacy 2026

In just 3 full days, I was able to learn more about government than 3 years of education. Not the memorizing of facts, but rather the nature of budgeting, partisan issues and lobbying. The capitol is an emmense building filled with maybe thousands of people all with different needs and wants. However in that storm, our age gave us strength instead of weakness and made us stand out. Insteas of being turned away for being too young, us Y Advocates played on our age to show our unrivaled passion.

I also could never imagine the friends that I would make. Just a few days earlier I did not even know who half of these people were, and yet in the end, I could definitely say each and every one of us was conncted by the work we put into our meeting and the love we hold for this program.

I want to bring these ideas of passion and connection to the mock senate I will be moderating. The goal shouldnt just be to get our bill passed, but also to make new best friends, learn a whole lot of new information, and of course to have fun while doing it all!
