Key Takeaways from Today’s Panel: Building a Career Beyond the Classroom Today’s panel session brought powerful insights on professional growth, career development, and navigating the modern corporate landscape. Here are the core highlights from our four distinguished speakers: Expand Your Scope Beyond traditional Roles (Mr. Ddumba – Academic Registrar, ITC): The insurance and broader corporate sectors require diverse skill sets from data analysis and statistics to specialized domain knowledge like agriculture. Success starts by asking: What specific problem can I solve, and where can I create value? Build a Personal Brand Grounded in Results (Ms. Shakira Shamim Mujuni CEO, GA Insurance Company): Professional branding isn't just about a title or a LinkedIn profile; it’s about consistency, reliability, and impact. Stretch beyond your defined role, deliver exceptional client experiences, and let your reputation speak for you before you even enter the room. Adopt an Employer Mindset & Own Your Growth (Dr. Simon Wandiembe – Makerere University): A degree gets you started, but continuous learning keeps you competitive. Focus on building leadership, sharpening soft skills like communication, and developing a mindset that looks to create opportunities rather than just seek employment. Translate Expertise into Value & Embrace the Journey (Melissa – Actuary, SWICO): Technical capability must be matched with clear communication and relentless curiosity. Ask questions, learn how your role connects to the whole business, and view early rejections not as failures, but as feedback to refine your approach. #InsuranceTrainingCollege #ITCUganda #InsuranceUganda #InsuranceProfessionals #InsuranceEducation #InsuranceIndustry #Professionalism #Integrity #Innovation #JohnSsebaanaKizito

The 3 Lessons from Hon. John Ssebaana Kizito Giving the opening remarks at the 9th John Ssebaana Kizito Memorial Lecture, Chris Bakesiga, Ag. CEO, Insurance Brokers Association of Uganda (IBAU), reflected on three enduring lessons from the life and legacy of Hon. John Ssebaana Kizito: 1. Professionalism is non-negotiable. Excellence, competence and commitment must remain at the heart of our work. 2. Integrity is your greatest capital. Be honest at all times. In insurance, trust is not just important—it is the foundation of the industry. 3. Innovation and empathy matter. The future of insurance requires us to embrace new ideas while keeping people and their needs at the centre of what we do. A powerful reminder that building the future of insurance starts with values that stand the test of time. Nine years on, we continue to celebrate and draw inspiration from the legacy of Hon. John Ssebaana Kizito. Speaking at the #9thJohnSsebaanaKizitoMemorialLecture, Saul Sseremba, CEO, ITC, expressed gratitude for the continued support of the insurance industry in keeping this legacy alive. “Hon. John Ssebaana Kizito was a man of service and vision. That is why we continue to tap into his legacy and pass on the values he stood for.” This year’s theme challenges us to develop insurance solutions that respond to people’s evolving needs as new risks continue to emerge. To the students here today, remember that value addition is how we build careers that last. #InsuranceTrainingCollege #ITCUganda #InsuranceUganda #InsuranceProfessionals #InsuranceEducation #InsuranceIndustry #Professionalism #Integrity #Innovation #JohnSsebaanaKizito
