It’s been a BIG couple of months. Time to get all that embodied learning back into my body. 😅

Grateful for it all. Looking forward to the conversations ahead, the plans taking shape, and the new paths we’re beginning to walk together. 🌿

MEMORY, BODIES, RITUAL
On view at Cine Lounge @madarts_space through December 20. A group video exhibition presented by @performance_in_flux

Featured in the exhibition Repeating Patterns and Always speaking you by Swilk @swilkwork

In Swilk’s performance installations, ethereal figures bound to their environment explore queer identity as an innate part of the human condition. The performers connect to objects of the Earth, emphasizing how the persistence of queerness parallels the permanence of the natural world. In the face of ongoing political violence, their work asserts that to eliminate queer people would require an undoing of human nature. “We are as inherent as the Earth itself.”

Repeating Patterns performed by Ell Boysen and Sif Rasmussen, Assist by Toya Willock
Always speaking you performed by Carmina Marquez and Tasya Abott

Swilk is a queer fiber installation and performance artist who creates both mechanically automated and environmentally activated sculptural weavings. Based in Oakland, California, their work connects people to the gestures of resilience that emerge from grief, particularly in the context of queer history.
Swilk has presented solo and group exhibitions internationally, including major projects at the Internet Archive (San Francisco), CICA Museum (South Korea), and New York Fashion Week, with work exhibited across the US, Europe, and Asia.

These threads aren’t just hanging there — they’re alive, responding to real data. Swilk @swilkwork is a queer fiber installation artist working at the intersection of weaving. Their newest piece imagines queerness as a horizon we’re always moving toward, staged around a bathroom sink and a mechanized head. This is why it became iconic

OPENING RECEPTION —
This Saturday, August 29 · 6–9 PM
MAD Arts Cine Lounge @madarts_space
481 S Federal Hwy, Dania Beach, FL 33004

Performance in Flux @performance_in_flux presents: Memory, Bodies, Ritual
Curated by Tere Garcia @tere.senyase

Performance in Flux joins forces with MAD Arts Cine Lounge to present a group exhibition of video works exploring the body through memory, identity, culture, ritual, and transformation.

Featuring:
🎥 My Mother and (A)I — Kawita Vatanajyankur @kawitavv
🎥 Each River Holds a Memory — Fernando Velázquez & Tiriri Rayo @f___velazquez_ @tiririrayo
🎥 Repeating Patterns & Always Speaking You — Swilk @swilkwork
🎥 We Knew the World in Fragments of Color — Victoria Ruiz @vic.toriaruiz

Memory, Bodies, Ritual brings together four video works that explore the body as a site of identity, memory, culture, and transformation.
Across the exhibition, performance becomes a language through which artists investigate how experience is held and expressed through the body. Movement, gesture, repetition, costume, and ritualized actions become ways of inhabiting different histories, identities, and states of being. The body can appear as a performer or an archive through which personal and collective experiences are made visible.
The works also consider how contemporary technologies can extend these embodied practices. AI, 3D scanning, and digital imaging introduce new ways of recording, directing, or transforming bodily presence. In other works, transformation happens through physical performance, symbolic imagery, and the body itself.

On view August 29, 2026 – December 20, 2026

In the foggy Berkeley forest last weekend, I photographed Swilk @swilkwork working on their piece “when I am lost I look to the sky”.

The performance used hand woven wool tapestry and cotton thread to speak to themes of queer identity and connection.

Thank you to @swilkwork @samer.k.s @screwmoi
