Confederate Pickets on Watch, 1865.

During the American Civil War, pickets served as the eyes and ears of an army, screening the enemy and reporting any movement to their command. In the event of an enemy attack, those on picket duty would alert the main army and serve as the first line of defense. Pickets we’re also tasked with preventing desertion, even though, ironically enough, picket duty had the easiest route to escaping the army.

A small squad of Russian troops go on patrol through a damaged village, while walking through the streets they were ambushed by a group of Ukrainians soldiers (with one being a British volunteer) who make quick work of most of them taking the Russian squad leader as a P.O.W. After taking the Russian squad leader to their rear lines to be taken to a nearby Ukrainian army camp for interment, the Ukrainian soldiers grab all the weapons, ammunition, supplies and helmets for the war effort

#minifiguremonday During World War Two while deployed to occupied Greece the entire 24th Infantry Division Pinerolo defected to the Greek resistance in 1943. While stationed in Larissa, Greece the division committed many war crimes against civilians, and following the Armistice of Cassibile German soldiers order all Italian soldiers to surrender but the 24th did not and instead fought against the Germans at Larissa retreating towards the Pindos mountain range which was under the control of the Greek communist resistance forces and after long negotiations with ELAS, Greek government in exile and British officers which on September 11th 1943 in the village of Pyli leaders of ELAS, EDES (Greek national republic league) and the British mission force Italians could join the resistance against the Germans, whereas those that refused to were disarmed and interned for transport to Italian P.O.W camps. The 24th had a strength of 5,500 troops and all their equipment and supplies which soon came in handy as their artillery section was used to repel a German attack on September 21st, though sadly their cavalry section failed to take Larissa airbase. By October negotiations between the Greek communist and republicans began to break down as ELAS did not trust the Italian soldiers due to facist sympathisers and so disarmed the 24th giving them many new weapons and equipment. The ELAS then took the Italians to ELAS controlled areas, where a German attack took one village where 6,000 Italians were prisoners, under 4,000 escaped seeking refuge amongst Greek civilians and joining local resistance forces though with a lack of supplies, medicine and food 1,500 soon died. In early 1944 General Adolfo Infante was appointed chief of the Italian Co Belligerent Army many Italians in Greece remained prisoners and forced labour under ELAS until repatriated to Italy in May 1945. These men were not the Italian unit to fight the Germans such as the Acqui Division (Captain Corelli’s Mandolin) and other units on the Dodecanese islands and the Battle of Kos, where sadly many Italian prisoners that were taken were massacred for fighting against the Germans
