TRULY, thank you Adrienne; y’all have opened up hella doors for us mentees.

also in general thank you dakota, angel, carol, felix, ryan, and kaylin for showing me so much love and support during this process. i have never had such a healthy, loving music community before and it’s such a blessing to have it now <3

- so use ur time to create something so cool

i made this EP through my grief, and also through my waking up as an adult, growing into my self love. after all, i am the same flesh as my grandma Eva Escamilla Porras, what’s not to love ? ❤️

NEED ME, or, (de)mystifying the myth of the modern primitive presents the western renaissance of body piercing as a definitively queer history rooted in the sexual underground – one that provided a vital bloodline to the pulse of queer artistic production through the 1980s and 1990s. Sourced from archival research primarily conducted at ONE Archives at the USC Libraries, the Body Piercing Archive, and the GLBT Historical Society, NEED ME is ultimately grounded in the archive itself. The exhibition will trace the networks of queer individuals and present evidence of piercings’ lineage in kink through magazines, correspondence, ephemera, and artwork. The exhibition explores icons such as Jim Ward and Fakir Musafar while synthesizing artworks and artists who contributed to what has been termed the age of the ‘modern primitive.’ Works and ephemera from Ron Athey, Bob Flanagan & Sheree Rose, Efrain Gonzalez, and Annie Sprinkle, among others, will illuminate the nuanced and layered drive toward the modern practice of piercing, working to enrich an intrinsically queer story. NEED ME intends to mystify as it demystifies and takes a stab at the first-ever public exhibition focused on the queer history of modern body piercing.

Soft opening on February 25 - opening reception Friday, February 27.

NEED ME is curated by Getty Marrow Emerging Professional Curatorial Assistant Quetzal Arévalo.
