More new music gets released than anyone can process. Even if you’re paying attention it’s hard to separate out the gems, but data can also help identify emerging talent in the firehose (and before they blow up for real). If you’re looking for new Australia-based artists to check out, I use data to surface artists who might not be on your radar yet. These are the acts that critics & tastemakers are backing right now and who you should make certain are on your must-follow list this week. You can get this (plus more of the detail) in your inbox every Sunday by subscribing to the free newsletter via the Essential Artists linkinbio x — Cover: Holly Hebe | Soundtrack: Margo Mann

New stuff gets released faster than you can keep up with it. Nothing beats having a good ear for a killer release, but data can also help identify emerging talent in the firehose (and before they blow up for real). @syccoworld celebrates the release of her album "Look Up" where we are graced by her crisp mellow vocal deliveries. In fact, she performs experimental indie pop with dreamy vibes evoking a forest where there's trees with abundant leaves and some flowers on the surface. Additionally, the way she articulated and projected felt like I was being summoned by a wisp to check out a specific section of the forest. This really encapsulated the feeling of mystery yet curiosity. She explained the thought process of her Look Up album as "about holding yourself through big feelings" which involved a "ramble of her big feelings hiding under a desk". This showed in the stage setup where she gets to showcases her synth and DJing skills. Additionally she conveyed clean tones in the guitar further emphasising how dreamy the mood and vibe the set felt. The reverb in her vocals create a dreamy feeling of laying down on a big grass area filled with small yellow flowers everywhere. Once there's animation going on in the projector, I became curious on how trippy it can really get. The slides alternated between her performance in real time and some of the visuals eg a dystopian city. Select songs she performed include: Up and She Go, Look Up, I've Loved And I Lost and Won't Say Love. Her set went for about 30 minutes total where we get a glimpse of her Look Up album live. And after this, there is a likely probability she might play in bigger venues, stadiums and arenas and more festivals now that she got to perform in big shows and also touring. Examples include: Here Comes The Sun Gold Coast Fest 2026, Home Is Where The Zorb Is tour 2025 (12/9/2025 is Freshwater with Theeth supporting), Spilt Milk House Party in Newcastle in 2024 and most notably 19/3/2022 as this was when I first discovered Sycco (same night I did photos for GRXCE next door at Gallery Bar). A show I enjoyed overall which got me drifting - like I am asleep dreaming of a wide wide forest and it's all bright and calm there
