✨️ MBC goes to California Ocean Day 🙌✈️

Students traveled to Sacramento and spent the day lobbying with advocacy groups and policymakers to support ocean conservation policies in the state capitol 🌊✊️

Along they way they connected with alumni, leaders they met last summer, and met lots of incredible people with a shared commitment to safe, accessible coasts and oceans in the state of California 🎉🎉🎉

@konservationfilms is helping share the story of our local sea turtles and the people dedicated to helping their environment.

Some of those people are us! MBCers went out this past weekend to see the San Gabriel River, pollution and turtles for themselves and left it a little better than they found it 🎉🎉🎉

Follow @konservationfilms to learn more, and stay tuned to see the 2026 MBC Capstone Symposium to learn about this project in detail 🙌

The March Scientific Diver cohort had the opportunity to continue our training in Catalina!

We built on our skills, learned new techniques, and continued developing what it means to be safe and effective divers in the field. Being able to apply everything in a new environment made the experience even more impactful.

We are walking away with new skills, more confidence, and a much deeper appreciation for what it means to be a scientific diver.

We are incredibly grateful for this experience and for the people we got to share it with!

Proud to announce that I am officially certified as a scientific diver with Scripps Institute of Oceanography!!! The past month has been an absolute blast, and I've had the pleasure of sharing it with one of the most kick-ass cohorts of all time. Special shout-outs to the incredible instructor team, you guys really are the best at what you do.

I don't know what my future holds, but you'd bet the ocean won't be far off!

Hi from Maya, Syd, and Paul! We were so excited to be a part of the March Scientific Diver program.

From the classroom to pool sessions, to our first dive off the SIO pier, this whole experience challenged us in the most meaningful ways. We had the best instructors and such a supportive cohort, which made the entire process so rewarding.

To start, we learned the foundations of scientific diving, from safety and planning to working as a team in the water, and we built confidence with every dive.

Definitely just the beginning, but it has already been such an incredible experience!

🪱 Worm Wednesday from @syd_tesch 🪱🙌🥳

What if this tiny deep-sea worm spans thousands of miles?

Gyptis robertscrippsi was first described from methane seeps off Costa Rica. But similar worms have now been found off Southern California and Alaska.

If they’re all the same species, that would mean a remarkable range stretching from Central America to the North Pacific.

How does a deep-sea worm disperse that far? Ocean currents? Larval transport? Evolutionary history?
Sometimes, mapping where a species lives is just as exciting as discovering a new one. 🌊🧬

Wiggle by next week to learn more about WORMS!

🪱 Welcome to our first Worm Wednesday 🪱🤘👏🥳

MAS MBC student Syd Tesch is diving into the deep sea for her independent study, investigating specimens suspected to be Gyptis robertscrippsi—a whimsical-looking polychaete worm originally described from methane seeps off Costa Rica.

Working alongside Scripps Institution of Oceanography museum scientist, Charlotte Seid (collections manager, Benthic Invertebrate Collection), Syd is using genetic data to ask a big question: Are worms collected from California and Alaska the same species—or something entirely new?

Right now, Syd is analyzing DNA sequences from these specimens, focusing on a commonly used “barcode” gene called COI. This week’s work involves aligning genetic sequences and learning how scientists use specialized software and statistical tools to compare organisms and test species boundaries.

This is just the beginning of the journey—from raw DNA data to a peer-reviewed micropublication. Stay tuned each Wednesday as we follow the science, the worms, and the process of discovering biodiversity hidden in the deep sea!
