“When you get so used to illustrating in your own style, it’s easy to forget all of the important principles that brought you there in the first place. Since I often paint characters that are whimsical and not close to being anatomically correct, I thought it’d be a good idea to take a step back and practice some realism. Even after you’ve studied and learned to draw or paint, it’s crucial to get those skills sharpened. This is the portrait I completed to do just that.” As you can see, alumnus, Sydney Blake is very talented! Give the artist a follow @sydesque!

This “bee-tiful” piece of work was created by alumnus, Sydney Blake. Here’s what the artist has to say about this artwork, “sometimes it’s hard to think of what to draw. Art block happens to every artist at some point. Luckily, Instagram and many other image sharing platforms present art challenges. #DTIYS is a hashtag that I follow. It means Draw this in your style. An artist will post a drawing using this hashtag allowing different artists to draw the same thing but in their own style. I saw this sweet little fairy making friends with a bee. I found the original challenge post on another RMCAD Alumni’s Instagram page and knew I had to give it a shot. I adored the concept so much! (The original character concept was created by Abbey Bryant @maddyabbs).” Give Sydney a follow @sydesque!

We all need some positivity in the world! Here’s what Sydney Blake has to say about this piece, "it's been a really hard time for all of us. And for some, it almost feels impossible to even dodge the bad news when it's being thrown at you from every direction. There's a lot that has happened this year that makes us want to escape to a happier place. It's something a lot of us want to do but find it next to impossible. Concentrating on celestial objects and characters is how I've been coping. When was the last time you went outside just to look up at the sky? It's shockingly breathtaking when you can see how contrastingly calm the sky is to the chaos here on earth. It's inspiring and heartening. I hope I can encourage people to look up, feel the sun and giggle back. Continue to look up as high as you can see. Everything is okay up there, and eventually we'll get to say the same about down here." Do yourself a favor a follow Sydney @sydesque!

“It’s not often that I do tributes but the disheartening news of this actor’s passing really inspired me to paint this portrait while practicing likeness. There are many reasons that people paint portraits of people. I wanted to bring to light the importance of this talented man who was not only a hero in films, but to our world. So, this is a tribute to Chadwick Boseman, a man who will truly be missed. May his soul rest peacefully.” Alumnus, Sydney Blake (@sydesque) created this beautiful tribute to honor the life of Chadwick Boseman.

"Lately, I've been challenging myself to add color to my drawings. I've never been too confident in my understanding of how colors work together, but I'm really starting to enjoy it now. I've drawn this character a couple of times and I feel she looks best in comfortable settings. I just think it's much more satisfying to look at. I love earth tones and muddy colors so that's what my color palette normally consists of. I've been using colored pencils on top of watercolors to obtain this kind of look. The process is so enjoyable!" Shout out to alumni, Sydney Blake on challenging herself in this beautiful piece. Give the artist a follow @sydesque!
