“The first embroidered topography I created was an anniversary present for my boyfriend. We climbed the Salathe Wall together in 2024 and it felt like an experience we would hold close for our lifetime. The following summer, I ventured out on several more walls and had the privilege to watch my beloved girlfriends accomplish walls of their own. We would always cheer each other on for the whole ordeal and typically have treats and love letters waiting upon return. It was a big deal to celebrate each other and our accomplishments, but these moments felt fleeting. Often, there’s a lot of prep and planning that goes into a big wall; then the wall itself may take up to a week, only to be followed by a short-lived celebration atop the mountain before racing down in time for work. It felt only logical to commemorate what will be some of our lives greatest achievements and fondest memories into something we could hold onto…”

The story “Wall Style” by Julia Lackey (@julialackey) is featured in Wayward Magazine. The piece dives into the intersection between climbing, community, and memorializing such physical experiences into something both artful and tangible. Images were captured by Abby Solis (@abbyrosesolis), Jon Purcell (@jonpurcell_), Mike Jeffries (@mikivusphotography) and Julia. To read the full piece, check out Issue 001.

❖

Julia Lackey lived in Yosemite National Park for two and a half years, and though Red Rock, NV was her first love, Yosemite climbing quickly stole her heart. She no longer works there, but she continues to return in pursuit of more ascents with inspiring women. She believes climbing is a celebration of life, and is always looking for more ways to personalize her ascents and honor the life-changing community she found there.

hello california, thank you

for bringing together the people i love, new and old. reminding me of the places that i call home, introducing me to our backyard creature neighbors. for creating the space to practice the things i love, both in my lifelong pursuits and the little things, like balancing around on a thin piece of webbing between trees and romping around the intertidal in a ten dollar wetsuit, all of which remind me of who i am. you’ve been wonderful to me. what a beautiful month.
