Did you think we would miss day 18 of #wlam2025 ?! 👀

Today we dove into the schedule of the average 3rd year student at Iowa State University’s College of Design in the Landscape Architecture program!

✨ Meet Sydney Weaverling ✨ (who is not only in the LA program, but is also pursuing two minors in Sustainability and Environmental Studies)

She starts her days like any other – gathering in studio to collaborate and finish up some assignments before classes begin. The day’s first class had a specific focus on resumes and portfolio building.

Shortly before her next class on landscape history, a group chat so generously told them about some free donuts setup just outside the building. Sydney’s class professor then graciously agreed to the request and released a stampede of thirty hungry students onto the donut table. Needless to say, the hungry horde returned to class and the donut stand was decimated.

Moving into her studio, she begins working on some bubble diagrams to get her ideas on paper for an ecovillage project. This project specifically involves the Cherokee Nation and has a number of factors to pay special attention to while designing.

Following a review period from their studio professor and some inspiring input from classmates, Sydney continued pushing the concept further into a more refined idea. This studio has specifically pushed the class to use all facets of the design process while developing their ideas which has been a great learning experience!

After studio, Sydney and her classmate spent some time preparing for their plant-, bake-, t-shirt-, sticker-sale. Though the baking part started out a bit rough with some medium-rare chocolate chip cookies, they made up for it by making extra puppy chow! The sale proved to be a huge success while set up in the COD’s atrium and Sydney was able to interact with a number of students she may not have had the opportunity to before.

Sydney ends her day like any other good student would – working in studio with her friends and classmates to chip away at the day’s comments on her semester long project.

Thank you to Sydney for letting us share a glimpse into her day!
