Stepping Up book launch part 1 💜 Featuring the varsity jacket from the cover!

**I would like to note that I was borrowing Whit’s book for photos which is why she isn’t holding one in hers.

Thank you @wordupbooks for having me and @lethydenise for moderating!

Like @mlauritanoillos said, one year doesn’t make a lot of sense when we’re a hair’s breadth away from thirteen years. September was our first date, so September has always been the month I think of first. Besides, today is also my nephew Theo’s FIFTH BIRTHDAY!!! (He did his best as ring bearer last year. We’ll remind him of his tears when he gets older.)

But last year was a phenomenal day full of all the sorts of shenanigans that make us, us. Not everyone we love could make it, but we had plenty of love with us. And some really good music and dancing.

These thank you notes represent the last bit of illustration I made for the wedding. These were bound with baker's twine and a tiny paper boat, sealed in a blue envelope with a messy little rubber stamp print I had to touch up with stabilo white-all.

I asked invitees to ‘be a part of our story.’ Well, when the person speaking to you is an illustrator, you should expect those words might just be taken literally. All the tiny people pictured across these images are based on guests and wedding participants that were actually there, in (approximately) those outfits, if somewhat imaginatively embellished on occasion. Little did everyone know that I was treating wedding photos as the ultimate reference picture file. Of course, my original plan was to capture everyone, but as usual (in this wedding and life in general) I had to tame my ambitions to get things done. So, people who were wearing brightly colored outfits or were taller or else recognizable in some way were more likely to appear atop the cliffs in Maine.

Just like in the invites, I snuck in some nods to our wedding ceremony, and various little memories and references. The Cape Elizabeth cliffs have been textured using images of the pages of closed books.

Even if I haven’t yet gotten someone to publish my own picture book story, no one can stop me from living inside one from time to time. Here’s hoping you all also appreciate my efforts!

This past Saturday, I *finally* wed my long time partner in crime, @dvojack , in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

We were blessed with perfect weather and the love and support of family and friends that went above and beyond to help us bring frantic, last-minute plans come to fruition! It was a day of play, dance, color, and light, finishing under an August full moon, that I will never forget.

My best man, @adamhunterpeck , who gave a beautiful and thoughtful speech and his wife, @courtneyautumnmartin , (who also took so many beautiful photos) helped out so much. From decorating into the wee hours, keeping me grounded in spite of my over ambitious vision, and test-flying paper airplanes, they were indispensable.

My older brother Steven and his soon to be husband Alexander were also key players setting up for both reception and ceremony! My little brother, @lauritad8158 and his wife @angela8158 dressed up and wrangled their adorable boys to participate in our somewhat unpolished procession! My cousin Mitchell also lent his height and warmth of spirit during our clean-up session.

Our wedding party had multiple beautiful souls who rose above anxiety and disability and shyness to be here for us, reading poetry, prose, adapted film dialogue, and speaking with heart in front of a crowd of many strangers. @alexacassaro , @lspicerart , and Javi—we will always remember how you chose to be there for us on our special day. And we would be remiss not to mention bonvivant @itsraecrawford and the singular @syleeart who helped drive everyone around in the unfamiliar wilds of Maine!

Of course, none of this could have happened without the time, energy, and support of our parents over the last 11 months. From research, planning, organization, driving, crafting, and baking, you tirelessly helped bring our quirky event to life. We love you, moms & dad!

More photos of the day will surely pop up here in the following months, until then, here are a few glimpses.

Thank you, my beautiful wife, Sarah, for giving me this day that I will always carry with me.

Until next time 🌸New York🌸!!!! (Later this summer because I have more people to see and book promo to do.)

We were only there for one full day and an afternoon before driving back home. Squeezed in our favorites: Books of Wonder and the Strand lol.

Nothing beats the old gal in spring and summer. We miss her every second of every day and if we get ultra rich we’re back for GOOD.

First time ever staying in a hotel in nyc but tbh that POD in Williamsburg was that girl!!! I’d do it again!!!!!!
