In northeast Syria, a generation of students has come of age exercising the right to learn in their mother tongue. They’re not giving it up easily.

For decades, Syria’s Baathist regime crushed the use of Kurdish, Syriac, and other non-Arabic languages. Linguistic dominance was a tool of Arab nationalism, but also a weapon against distrusted communities—Kurds chief among them. Like other minority languages, Kurdish was spoken in private: banished from street signs, state facilities, and the classrooms where ideas and identifies were formed.

Syria’s war changed that. As the regime retrenched from the northeastern Jazeera region, the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration introduced multilingual education: Arabic, Kurdish, and Syriac were granted equal status. When the Autonomous Administration was dissolved via Decree 13 of January 2026, some hoped that the decree’s acknowledgment of Kurdish as a “national language” would preserve its place in schools.

That hope collapsed in August, when the Ministry of Education announced Kurdish instruction would be relegated to three lessons per week. Students and teachers who had spent more than a decade learning and teaching in their native tongue were told it was time to revert to Arabic. Rather than acquiesce, thousands have walked out of schools in Qamishli, Hasakah city and beyond.

This mobilization unfolds within broader currents of unrest, in Syria writ large and in the Jazeera specifically. While some protestors take to the streets over competing visions of northeast Syria’s cultural and political order, others are focused on the explosion in prices since the region’s reintegration with state authority.

All, though, are part of the same process: Syrians are laying claim to the country’s newly open public space, in hopes of using it to shape the Syria they wish to live in.

Syria’s mental health crisis is unfolding in a context where the language of psychological distress has become more socially accepted, even as the institutions meant to respond to it remain fragmented and overstretched. The article traces how war and economic collapse have intensified mental health needs, while migration and return have reshaped how some Syrians understand and seek care.

Produced by Synaps and cross-published by SyriaUntold, the article brings together Alex Simon, Lina Ghoutouk, Malak Shanawani and Samar Alumari to examine the gap between growing awareness and the realities of access, regulation and continuity of care, while also looking at the community ties and everyday forms of connection that many Syrians rely on as part of recovery.

In the hilly countryside west of Damascus, residents are organizing to keep their land.

The threat they face is almost as old as the Syrian state. Since the 1950s, governments in Damascus have expropriated land and uprooted residents: whether to break up large feudal holdings, build state housing and infrastructure, or punish distrusted communities.

Today, the transitional authorities wield Assad-era laws to pursue new rounds of expropriation—or to resume schemes set in motion under the former regime. Such is the case in al-Bejaa. In June, its residents got notice that they would be evicted to make way for Abyat Hills: a Saudi-funded housing project whose units will be priced far beyond the reach of those who have lived and farmed the land for decades.

Facing this old injustice, they have seized on Syria’s newly open public sphere to insist upon their rights. They tell their stories on camera and gather by the hundreds to protest; they appear before officials and demand to know why foreign investors would take precedence over their ownership deeds.

Whatever their outcome, this struggle and others like it are already shaping how Syrians see themselves and their state. What does one owe the other, and what do you do when the bargain is not upheld?

“Much has changed since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, and much has not,” @alexgsimon1 writes in a new essay in Hidden Cities on the hopes, fears, ambiguities, and contradictions in Syria after Assad — adapted from his new book Syrians in the Shadow of War from @auc_press

The book draws on years of research and fieldwork in Syria by @synapsnetwork, including the social and economic decay that preceded the Assad regime’s collapse.

“The challenges Syria now faces, and the resources it brings to bear in tackling them, are years and decades in the making. A starting point is to reckon with that legacy.”

A great pleasure of writing with Synaps is the amount of care we put into illustrating our work. The art we choose is a way to deepen the impact of our writing, but also to connect with and credit artists we admire.

As we publish “Syrians in the Shadow of War,” whose cover bears the brilliant work of @tammamazzam, we pulled together some of the other pieces that Syrian artists have generously shared with us over the years.

With deep gratitude to @azza.abo.rebieh , @anasalbraehe , @mohamad_hafez , Khalil Younes, and the late Elias Zayyat

Listening to Syria: A Q&A with Alex Simon

Watch this video Q&A with Alex Simon, researcher, writer, and co-founder of Synaps, who discusses "Syrians in the Shadow of War: Everyday Struggles and Survival", a book drawn from more than 3,000 interviews conducted between 2017 and 2024.

Alex talks about the stories behind the book, what inspired the project, and what he hopes readers will take away from the experiences of ordinary Syrians navigating conflict, economic hardship, and profound social change.

Here it is!

In one form or another, we at Synaps have been working toward this book for a decade—ever since we first conceived our Syria project in 2016. Today it’s out from @auc_press and right at home in our Synaps library.

Drawing on thousands of interviews across Syria and its diaspora, my colleagues and I show how Syria transformed in the seven years before Bashar al-Assad’s fall—and how those transformations shape today's transition. Among the great joys of this new phase is that my Syrian coauthors, long anonymous, can appear in their own names.

If you’re in the US / UK / Europe, you can buy it on Bookshop, Amazon, or IndiePubs. IndiePubs maximizes proceeds for our publisher, who in turn offers a 20% discount. See the link in my bio, and use the code Syria20 at checkout.

If you’re in Lebanon or Syria unsure how to get your hands on a copy, let me know and I’ll help.

With deep thanks to @tammamazzam for gracing the cover with his art, and to the brilliant scholars who have generously endorsed the book.

After the fall of the former regime and the ensuing security vacuum, local groups across Damascus and its countryside ormed neighborhood committees to protect their communities and respond to urgent local needs. Most of these committees gradually shifted their activities to WhatsApp groups that brought together neighborhood residents, where they could report emergencies and incidents.
Fazaat Watan (National Rallying) is one of these groups, in the Qassaa neighborhood of Damascus. It stands out for its clear organizational structure and its continuous patrols. It is most notable for choosing not to carry weapons and for its members coming from different sectarian backgrounds. Unlike many similar initiatives, women also play a visible role within the group.
Like other neighborhood committees, the group has expanded its activities beyond security. It now helps distribute fuel during shortages, assists residents in cleaning streets and dealing with damage from storms, plants and maintains public gardens, improves street lighting, and helps ensure security during social and religious events in the neighborhood.
The work of Fazaa Watan and similar local groups does not appear to be ending anytime soon. Although the security situation has gradually improved, residents’ intimate knowledge of their neighborhoods and the people who live there remains crucial to resolving security issues and preventing them before they occur.
Although Fazaa members are proud of what they do, the time they volunteer to serve others often disrupts their own lives and leaves them exhausted. They continue simply because they want to live in safe neighborhoods—for themselves, their families, and their neighbors—even as many continue to think about leaving the country.
This raises a broader question: To what extent do these local committees reflect active citizenship, and how do they encourage participation in initiatives that support social cohesion and civil peace? What do you think?
This video is the fourth in a series exploring how Syrian communities manage conflict at the local level. It was produced in collaboration with Synaps Research Network. @synapsnetwork

‪@synapsnetwork‬
