In honor of transgender awareness month I wanted to share with all of you my BFA Thesis, centered around the importance of tattoos in gender non conforming spaces.
My work is representative of creating a permanent mark to embody an internal need for acceptance. The intersectionality of queer people and people with visible tattoos as outsiders in society describes the core focus of my work. Through performance-based tattoo shows, accompanied by original screen printed posters, I engage my audience to reflect on the transformation of the human body, which is carried out in the tattooing process. When designing these tattoos, I focus heavily on line and form to create aesthetic pieces that mold to each subject. The repetitive process of screen printing in order to create posters to go along with my performance emphasizes the labor and creative process of advertising a show. These posters use captivating and often extreme imagery to push the narrative of trans acceptance and bodily autonomy, as well as advertise the live show.
In my thesis show, I am using the symbol of Icarus to portray the idea of escaping the limits of the physical body to be transformed into something which society might not accept as ‘normal’. By creating large-scale tattoos in front of an audience, I demonstrate the pain that comes from transformation, and it is specifically this - the painful nature of transformation, that represents an experience inherent with queerness. My tattoo performances generate a safe space for people to come and join in the ritual of becoming someone different, but unapologetically authentic.

Thank you for watching and reading :)
