Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Kun-Hao Yu has received a multiyear award from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to develop energy-efficient building panels that are installed with robotic assistance.

The project, “3D-Printed Siding and Human-Robot Collaboration for High-Performance Retrofits,” will support the development of a prefabricated, carbon-sequestering concrete siding system for home energy retrofits, while pairing the new material with a collaborative human-robot installation process. The goal is to improve building performance while making retrofits faster, more efficient, and safer for construction workers.

New York has an estimated 5.3 million single-family homes, more than half of which were built before 1960. The state also has a substantial stock of older multifamily buildings, creating significant opportunities for energy-efficiency retrofits. Yu’s project will test the 3D-printed panels in the lab, comparing how they perform against conventional wall assemblies. The team will also conduct field testing at the Building Envelope Systems Test (BEST) Facility, an on-campus testbed used to evaluate building performance in real-world conditions. Finally, they plan to complete a full-scale dormitory retrofit on Syracuse University’s South Campus.

“Our prior work showed that 3D-printable concrete can be designed to increase carbon uptake through both material formulation and the geometric freedom enabled by 3D printing,” explains Yu. “This NYSERDA project takes the next step by integrating that material into a complete building-envelope retrofit system and pairing it with robot-assisted installation. The goal is to demonstrate how these technologies can work together at building scale and help create more energy-efficient, lower-carbon retrofit solutions for New York.”

Professors Charles Driscoll, John Trimmer and Changmin Shi will be honored next month by the Technology Alliance of Central New York at its 26th Celebration of Technology Awards.

The banquet is scheduled for Monday, November 2nd, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse.

Changmin Shi, an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, will receive the Young Technologist of the Year Award. The award goes to a Central New York resident age 35 or younger who has made recent outstanding contributions in a STEAM field. Shi’s work includes electrochemical material systems for batteries and optically tunable materials for thermal energy regulation.

John Trimmer, an Assistant Teaching Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will receive the College Educator of the Year Award. The honor recognizes an educator who has made outstanding contributions to STEAM education at the college level in Central New York. Trimmer's humanitarian work on water systems has taken him around the world.

Charles Driscoll, an Emeritus University and Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Driscoll is one of the world's leading experts on acid rain, mercury and the effects of air pollution and climate change on forests and lakes.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Yizhi Liu and his PhD student Yanxi Liu have developed a system that allows a humanoid robot to observe construction workers and replicate their physical techniques – a breakthrough Liu believes is among the first of its kind in the construction field.

They published their findings in Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, one of the leading peer-reviewed journals covering construction automation and robotics.

In the study, Liu’s team built what they call a vision-based Perception-and-Action system, which enables a humanoid robot to watch, process and reproduce the motions of skilled construction workers. Using the system, the robot successfully learned and executed 30 distinct construction skills and tasks demonstrated directly by human workers on-site.
