Professors Charles Driscoll, John Trimmer and Changmin Shi will be honored next month by the Technology Alliance of Central New York at its 26th Celebration of Technology Awards.

The banquet is scheduled for Monday, November 2nd, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse.

Changmin Shi, an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, will receive the Young Technologist of the Year Award. The award goes to a Central New York resident age 35 or younger who has made recent outstanding contributions in a STEAM field. Shi’s work includes electrochemical material systems for batteries and optically tunable materials for thermal energy regulation.

John Trimmer, an Assistant Teaching Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will receive the College Educator of the Year Award. The honor recognizes an educator who has made outstanding contributions to STEAM education at the college level in Central New York. Trimmer's humanitarian work on water systems has taken him around the world.

Charles Driscoll, an Emeritus University and Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Driscoll is one of the world's leading experts on acid rain, mercury and the effects of air pollution and climate change on forests and lakes.

New research by Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Anupam Pandey, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), has found that microscopic folds in soft materials can act like tiny, programmable traffic gates for liquid droplets.

The folds can stop droplets, let them pass, or merge them together without any surface coatings or additional hardware. Remarkably, the droplets never touch the fold. They sense it from a distance and slow down, stop short, or change course in response.

The researchers worked with “creases” – narrow, self-contacting downward folds that form when a soft, rubber-like surface is compressed. They found that these creases curve the surface around them, creating an energy barrier a droplet feels from a distance. Droplet smaller than a critical size stop in their tracks before ever touching it, while larger droplets sail right through, creating a sharp threshold.

Adjusting how much the surface is compressed changes the size cutoff, allowing the same crease to be reprogrammed on the fly to block or admit different droplets. This effect is disproportionate: squeezing 15 percent harder quadruples the threshold size.

“What we did not expect is that drops of different sizes are not sensing the same thing,” says Pandey. “The large ones respond to how steep the fold is, the small ones to how quickly that steepness changes.”

Mechanical and aerospace engineering researchers have received $1.35 million to build a pipeline that trains students from elementary school through college for careers in battery and energy storage technology.

The three-year grant is funded through the National Science Foundation's Energy Storage Engine Scholars Initiative program and administered by the Griffiss Institute. Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department Chair Quinn Qiao, will serve as principal investigator. Professor Zhenyu Gan is co-principal investigator. Anthony Terrinoni, director of Orange Works is also a co-principal investigator.

The initiative, called "Charged for the Future: Building Central New York's Battery Workforce," runs from July 2026 through June 2029 and is designed to give students a continuous path from grade school to college that uses energy storage as a common theme.

The Orange Works summer STEM program gives high schoolers experience building autonomous vehicles, developing a pipeline into the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

As part of the program, 23 high school students from the greater Syracuse area built and operated different autonomous systems using video game-style controllers.

Students also worked on UAS-SAR (Unmanned Air System—Synthetic Aperture Radar), exploring radar imaging by building and flying a radar on a small drone and using it to capture images of different objects. Throughout the program, students also got a foundational look at the batteries driving these systems, discussing how factors like weight, capacity and charge time shape the performance of vehicles operating on land, in the air and underwater.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Zhenyu Gan was recognized with a STEM Under 40 award from the Museum of Science and Technology for research shaping Central New York’s growing STEM economy.

Gan directs the Dynamic Locomotion and Robotics Lab, studying how animals shift fluidly between gaits and applying those principles to legged robots that can adjust their posture, leg length or shape depending on the task. Gan also studies robotic exoskeletons designed to reduce injury and fatigue in physically demanding jobs.

His research in robotics, controls and automation sits squarely in fields central to advanced chip fabrication, where precision robotics keep cleanroom production lines running, allowing Gan’s students to develop the engineering skills valued by companies like Micron.
