A 20-year editing veteran got tired of paying for AI rough-cut tools that left wonky cuts and dead space — so he built his own. Vic (Systems by Vic) created Perfect Cuts, a free Claude-based tool built specifically for talking-head footage. Instead of making editorial guesses like most automated tools, it transcribes the footage, removes bad takes and gaps, and aligns every cut to actual audio waveform data using decibel thresholds. It doesn't try to finish your edit — no VFX, no B-roll, no creative pacing decisions. What it does hand off: XML files for Premiere and Resolve, SRT captions, EDL files, and a CSV spreadsheet logging every cut decision with reasoning, so you can actually audit what it did and why. The catch: it needs clean audio in a quiet environment to work well. Great for studio-recorded talking-head content, less reliable for run-and-gun or noisy interview setups. The bigger story isn't really the tool — it's the pattern. An experienced editor with a specific problem built a better solution than the paid options, using Claude's API, and gave it away for free.
