Thank you to everyone who joined us this past weekend to wander and learn in the mystical Fontainebleau Forest.

We felt the effects of the summer’s heatwaves, and as parts of the forest recovers from the recent fires, we were reminded of how constantly is changes and the role fungi play in these processes.

Hoping to make it back very soon for those who couldn’t make it this time.

Follow @systemsofmatter for more wonderful events!

Thank you @divyavnkt for featuring @systemsofmatter in @service95 and queen @dualipa for being down with positive mischief. We don’t need permission to be part of the future! Come join us next weekend for some guerrilla planting and a seed gathering walk! Do you have a group in your community?

On Thursday September 17th
We gathered along the Canal Saint-Martin for a plant walk. We discussed the ways that Paris’s architecture and aesthetic deliberately create a city that centers the human and treats plants like architectural features rather than living members of ecosystems. Decorative plants are replaced seasonally in parks, and any spontaneous plants that grow through the cracks here are meticulously pulled out or burned. We found it surprisingly difficult to find plants growing in the cracks in manicured Parisian neighborhoods.

On our walk we talked about the resiliency of the plants growing through the cracks and the messages and medicines that they have to share with us. The ways that many of the plants that are now considered invasive were once prized exotic plants coming from the Americas, Asia and other parts of the world. Brought over in wardian cases for the botanical gardens they then escaped and found home in new places. It was beautiful to witness a group of 15 people all bending down, looking at the plants that most step on or walk by without any curiosity.

Towards the end of our walk, as the sun set and we looked at plants by flashlight, participants shared how over the course of the two hours we spent together, their eyes and senses opened and they were already seeing their neighborhood walks in new ways. They recognized that they don’t have to leave the city to learn and connect to plants, but they can spend time learning the plants here and making it a part of the mundane.

Gratitude to everyone who came, your curiosity and open-heartedness. And to @systemsofmatter @loveinthecracks & @herban.cura for bringing us all together to connect.

Join us for a very special and impropmtu plant walk in Paris this Thursday at 7pm with Lily Consuelo Saporta Taigiuri, Antonia Estela Pérez, and Mekdela Maskal

Together, we’ll explore the plants growing along Canal Saint-Martin and through the cracks and edges of the city. We’ll learn about some of their medicinal and edible properties, while spending time slowing down, observing, drawing, and getting to know the plants around us.

This will be an opportunity to consider the plants that make their way through urban spaces and the relationships we can build with the more-than-human world.

Come curious, bring a notebook or sketchbook if you’d like.

WHY ISN’T OUTER SPACE HOT, BUT YOUR LIVING ROOM IS? ☀️

Good design begins with understanding how the world actually works.

Join us at Galerie45 for an eye-opening talk with physicist Dr. Marijana Milicevic as we explore how the physical processes that govern our environment can become practical tools for design.

Following a summer of heatwaves, Dr. Milicevic—former CNRS researcher and current climate-adapted building scientist at Saint-Gobain Research Paris—dives into how heat, radiation, and evaporation shape our urban spaces. We will explore materials and forms inspired by climate-adapted architecture to help us build better, thermally conscious futures.

The conversation will be hosted by Liberal Arts faculty member Lily Consuelo Saporta Tagiuri, instructor of Systems of Matter—a class on the ecological, political, and cultural implications of material use. She is currently teaching Food Futures, a course exploring how food cultures are shaped and, in turn, shape us—inviting students to imagine what the future of food might hold.

👤About the Speaker
Marijana Milicevic, PhD, is a physicist whose work follows light—from light confined in nanostructures to sunlight interacting with buildings. After researching light–matter interactions at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, she now works on climate-adapted buildings at Saint-Gobain Research Paris, exploring how materials, radiation, and moisture shape thermal comfort in buildings and cities. She enjoys using experiments to make invisible physical phenomena visible and believes good design begins with understanding how the world actually works.

Paris readers one for you

On Monday evening Sendb00ks and Systems of Matter invite you to convene beneath the changing trees to pick up copies of Ovid’s Metamorphoses

Come to meet fellow readers and discuss transformation within these ancient stories (the seed of the six artist sleeves) as we descend into autumn

@lilysayhey is an eco-futurist, designer and teacher who hosts @systemsofmatter workshops throughout city gardens to encourage residends to muddy their hands in the land that we love, learning about ecology while embracing community

All are welcome but please pre-order your copy for pick up via sendb00ks.com or send us a dm to hold one for you

If you would like to host a sendb00ks meet up near you, write to us at contact@sendb00ks.com

@systemsofmatter off to an amazing start! I began this creative programming around ecology because it is something I craved in Paris! And the momentum and response has been humbling. So grateful for this growing community and for the incredible teachers who have been part of it so far (even in this heatwave)! From watercoloring with river water on the Seine with @fernandaballesterosf to a lecture about the sublime with @anitra_l to herbalism blends with @panaceaplants , to seed bombing and a trees of Paris bike ride with me @lepelotonstudio ! Programming for the fall is in full swing, and I can’t wait to share. We have dye workshops, clay meditations, lectures on beauty, local plant cyanotypes, seed keeping and gathering, and and and!!!! Watch this space! And if you want to propose a workshop, please do! No time like now to be engaged with the more-than-human world. Xx

Weekend in Paris. Guerrilla gardening. Seed bombs. Wildflower dumplings. On bikes.

Touring to the oldest tree (black locust), a gift to the city dating back to the 1600’s - she has seen some things. And the tallest tree (sycamore) at 150 years old considered just an adolescent as they live to be well over 400 years old …

A tiny, beautiful way to help the small sentients in our urban ecosystems 🐝🌼🦋 as without them, we simply will have no food.

Thank you @systemsofmatter + @lilysayhey for creating these gatherings. Cannot wait to spend more time in France, together 🤍

Our first month since opening @lepelotonstudio has flown by with a full schedule of cultural, wellness, and clubhouse events that have facilitated conversations, connection, discovery, and growth across multiple areas of interest. We are thrilled to have so many new faces and longtime regulars on this journey with us.
