“This large-scale collage is built from layers of hand-cut text compiled into an atmospheric field of noisy color. My interest in excavating family history led me to long conversations with my grandmother, Joan, who lives in Jackson, MS on the farm where I grew up. While working through this series, I realized that our routine phone calls and visits were becoming the “process” and that the act of painting could be a vehicle for strengthening and preserving familial ties. The title “Heartwork,” refers to the labors of love my grandmother performs regularly - such as sending homemade divinity candy through the USPS across state lines (arriving melted). The initial layer of this collage is made from pastel rubbings of the stepping stones, bricks, and stucco of my childhood home.” —Taylor Loftin

Claire Whitehurst & Taylor Loftin
January 5 - February 17
Artist Reception: Friday February 2, 6-9p
.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville (TSA GVL) artist collective is excited to present new works by Claire Whitehurst and Taylor Loftin in our next exhibition, salt lick in the windowsill. Composed of recent small paintings and ceramic works, the show explores an interplay of colors, imagery, and forms deeply rooted in the shared Southern experiences of the artists. Raised in Mississippi, the artists weave a collective narrative that serves as a meditation: a contemplative exploration of the transient beauty and underlying tension inherent in Southern environments. Nature infests, abundantly growing over and hiding the underlying structures of the landscape, similar to the artists’ upbringing navigating social realities. Seeking transcendence, the exhibition presents the South through an otherworldly lens: imposing and beautiful.

salt lick in the windowsill opens tomorrow as part of Greenville's First Friday Art Crawl @macartscouncil
.
The exhibition features new works by artists Taylor Loftin @t.lof and Claire Whitehurst @claire_downes both hailing from Mississippi and their perspectives in navigating the changing landscape. As paintings and small ceramic prints, the artists unpack southern environments as abstractions: interplays of color that mimic the transformative qualities inherent in the South.
