The Industry Is Sleeping on TROD

In a music scene as fast-moving and competitive as Nigeria’s, it’s easy for real talent to get overlooked. Trends shift overnight, algorithms decide what goes viral, and sometimes, artists with genuine skill don’t always get the spotlight they deserve. One name that consistently comes up in conversations about underrated greatness is TROD.

TROD—short for “The Return of Dagrin”—carries a legacy that already places weight on his shoulders. As the younger brother of the late Dagrin, expectations were high from the start. But rather than ride solely on that legacy, TROD has built his own identity—one rooted in sharp lyricism, street authenticity, and a deep understanding of Yoruba rap culture.

What makes TROD stand out is his technical ability. His flow is tight, his delivery is confident, and his wordplay reflects both intelligence and street awareness. In an era where melody often overshadows bars, TROD remains committed to real rap—the kind that demands attention and rewards listeners who pay close attention to lyrics.

Despite this, he hasn’t quite broken into the mainstream in the way his talent suggests he should. And that’s where the conversation shifts from ability to industry dynamics. The Nigerian music industry today heavily favors commercial appeal, danceability, and viral moments. Artists who dominate charts often lean into catchy hooks and global sounds, sometimes at the expense of lyrical depth. TROD, on the other hand, stays grounded in hardcore rap, which—while respected—is not always pushed as aggressively by major platforms.

Another factor is visibility. Without constant media presence, strategic collaborations, or heavy marketing backing, even the most talented artists can remain under the radar. TROD has delivered strong projects and freestyles, but the kind of industry push that turns respect into widespread fame has been limited.
