September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor the courage of children and families facing cancer. At George Mark Children’s House, Manny’s story reminds us why compassionate, holistic care is so essential.

When 16-year-old Manny arrived at George Mark, his family was at a breaking point. Battling nasopharyngeal carcinoma—a rare and aggressive cancer—he was physically exhausted and emotionally drained from grueling treatments. His devoted mother and seven siblings had been with him every step of the way, but they desperately needed a refuge.

That essential support came in the form of George Mark’s Cancer Care Program. From the moment they arrived, the family was fully embraced by the George Mark team. The clinical and psychosocial teams sprang into action, creating a care plan that addressed Manny’s symptoms and met the needs of his entire family. Warm aquatic therapy eased his neuropathy. Nutritious meals were lovingly prepared. And most importantly, his family was able to stay by his side in the family suites, a space that allowed healing and togetherness.

Beyond medical care, the George Mark team created moments of joy—a birthday celebration in the garden, art workshops, and puppy cuddles. Manny also experienced unforgettable outings, including meeting Giants pitcher Tristan Beck @t_beck07 Oracle Park.

These once-in-a-lifetime experiences restored Manny’s spirit as much as his health. Slowly, his strength and smile returned, lifting his entire family.

Today, Manny is in remission. His family has moved into a new apartment filled with hope, and he is now attending college with dreams of becoming a surgeon.

As we mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Manny’s journey is a powerful reminder of the resilience of children and the unique care George Mark provides—care that heals body, spirit, and family alike.
