We asked a few of the I AM WATER team and our facilitators to share what the ocean means to them! 🌊

One question. A few very different answers. Same love! 💙

What does the ocean mean to you? Tell us in the comments! 👇

Guided tour for @iamwater_foundation Adventure-Based Learning Trainees to Elsies Peak 🙏

The Daughter started as a Trainee herself and now their Programme Manager ❤️ of course she booked her mother for the tour 😏

Her passion is the ocean and mine are the mountains and both working in fields we absolutely love 💞

Algamdullillah 🤲🏼

Last week we hosted our first ever leadership camp with our Adventure-Based Learning trainees.

On top of guided hikes and swims, night-time walks, foraging and shared braai’s, they also completed their final practical assessments - the last stretch before they qualify to become lead facilitators!

We’re so proud of this incredible group of young leaders and the hard work they’ve put in this year.

These are the people that will soon be leading other young South Africans into their own relationship with nature and the ocean. We have no doubt they are ready! 🌊✨

August was full of fun and learning 🌊✨
Here are some of the highlights!

👉 We ran 4 school speaking series, reaching 505 learners
👉 We initiated 79 new River Guardians from two local primary schools
👉 We ran one Ocean Guardians workshop with 11 young budding conservationists
👉 Our ABL (Adventure-Based Learning) trainees went on leadership camp and finished their portfolios
👉 We went dragon-boating as a team!
👉 We ran a community snorkel on MPA Day and over 100 people came
👉 We ran an impact-driven storytelling masterclass at AFDA for their Honours students
👉 We attended the @sportforsocialchangenetwork Arise Women Symposium alongside other inspiring change-makers

We’re so grateful to our ocean-loving community for helping us continue the work we love.

Applications for our 2027 ABL cohort are open until September 16th! If you know a young person ready to build a life-changing relationship with the ocean, send them our way! 🌊 link in bio.

Our most recent Ocean Guardians crew from Laerskool Paul Greyling didn’t get a gentle, sunny welcome to the ocean. They got grey skies, mist and freezing water - and some of them had never even put their face in water before!

They still went in anyway, and they came out shivering, grinning and dancing 🕺✨

Between rockpool explorations and snorkelling, we also got to discuss the issues facing our oceans - and what we can actually do about them, together.

We landed on one powerful takeaway: pick up any litter you see - it might not be your litter, but it’s your planet 🌍

Recently the I AM WATER team did an exciting experience exchange with @dhyclub 🐉

Ever heard of dragon boating? It’s a high-energy team water sport where 10 to 20 paddlers propel a long canoe-like boat 🚣🏽‍♀️

Our ABL (Adventure-Based Learning) group were lucky to be welcomed to the V&A Waterfront Marina for a three-hour team-building experience, where we learnt the call-outs and paddling techniques. We had DHY paddlers riding along with us to help us refine our form too! 🌊

This was a good example of what our Adventure-Based Learning programme is about: stepping out of your comfort zone, embracing challenges and learning through active engagement with outdoor activities.

We feel so lucky to have the Drachen Hari-Yoshi Dragon Boat Club give us this experience where we got to see these principles in action: resilience, teamwork and adaptability.

This October, DHY will represent South Africa at the first-ever international Dragon Boat championship in Africa, hosted in Uganda. Make sure you follow them to stay up to date with their journey.

Thanks again to the team who made this experience possible AND to our ABL team, who showed up with excitement and enthusiasm.

What an incredible morning we had at Miller’s Point on MPA Day! 🌊✨

The water was flat, the visibility was clear and then, as if on cue, a pod of whales came past to say hello! We couldn’t have planned it to be any better. This is what Marine Protected Areas are for.

Thank you so much to the over 100 members of our community who came out from near and far to celebrate with us. We felt lucky to share our love of this particular MPA with other ocean advocates, as well as first-time swimmers and everyone in between.

We can’t wait to do it again. If you joined us, let us know what you thought of the day, we’d love to hear what you saw under the waves👇

We asked some of the team to give us their best seal impression 👀 and this is what we got 🦭 How did we do?

Here in Cape Town, we have an abundance of Cape Fur Seals! Here’s some facts about these furry friends that you might not have known👇

🦭 They bark, growl and groan to stake out territory and a mother can pick out her own pup’s calls in amongst colonies that are thousands strong!

🦭 They aren’t true seals - they’re “eared seals”, and are more closely related to sea lions

🦭 They can rotate their hind flippers which is why they can move surprisingly fast on land

No single organisation can protect the whole ocean - it’s too vast and the threats are too big. This is why we don’t try to do it alone.

Last week our team headed to Gansbaai to meet the people behind @marinedynamics @dyerict and @apssza - to learn about the work they do in their area and connect over what we both love: our big Blue! 🌊💙

We may be separate organisations working in different areas but we are a network of hands holding one shared vision of protecting the world we love and the many beautiful creatures in it.

Pictured here:
1. Our team kitted out in life-jackets and raincoats to get on the @marinedynamics boat
2. Our founder, Hanli, with a warm smile of gratitude for the incredible hospitality we received from the @marinedynamics crew
3. The team at the harbour walking into @marinedynamics custom-designed boat, ready for our Shark Cage Diving adventure
4. A beautiful Skua flying next to the boat as we ventured out into the open water
5. The team getting ready to get in the water, with seagulls swirling around us - excited by the chum trail used to attract the sharks
6. Watch the team climb into the cage as a Cape Fur Seal plays in the water next to the boat
7. Our intern @anoyolo_24 pushing past her nervousness and being brave in the water!
8. Spotting a beautiful Copper Shark / Bronze Whaler in the water
9. Sweet greetings from Gansbaai’s thriving colony of Cape Fur Seals
10. Our very own @shireenadamssadien holding a penguin and helping the handlers at lunch time at @apssza (part of the @dyerict)
11. A mural of different penguin species on the wall at @dyerict @apssza

We were amazed at every point at the care and dedication of the @marinedynamics @apssza and @dyerict teams. We got to speak to their marine biologists, their programme organisers and their staff about the work they are doing to protect the wildlife in the area. If you can, please go and support their efforts to save and protect the sharks, seals and penguins.

We often speak of the ocean as if it begins at the shoreline, but every river, catchment, wetland and trickle through the veld is part of the same body of water we love.

To learn to protect the ocean, we have to follow the water all the way upstream: to the rivers that carry life, sediment, and sometimes pollution, into the big blue.

Our ABL cohort gathered at Paradise Park today to learn the language of moving water - running mini-SASS scorecards so we can learn from the mayflies and caddisflies, walking slowly through the indigenous flora, and learning the names of all who call this place home. This is all part of our River Guardians’ Workshops.

We can’t wait to run these experiences with schools again soon! Reach out to us if you’d like to host one with your community.
