Photographers get in ruts. Any industry can experience a rut. It happens when you perform the same routine, system, task over and over until it becomes robotic. Freelance artists can succumb to this easily if they let their "process" become the foundation of their business.... forgetting the heart behind the art. I spent last year reimagining my business and how I wanted each session to feel like an opportunity to explore. So with all my recent sessions, I've been going back to my favorites for inspiration and reflection. I was reminded of this curated wedding day intended to showcase vendor talent. Thanks to @sawgrassmktg for resurfacing these images. One thing I noticed was that I not only zoomed in on details, but I discovered a signature move of mine. I love to zoom out....like wayyyy out. One of my taglines for the business is "celebrating NC lifestyle". And I find myself gathering as much of our scenery into the frame as I can....over and over again. I just don't see a lot of portrait photographers incorporating that much marginal space into their work. But I LOVE IT. Going beyond my list of routine prompts, planning for my sessions in advance, asking the right questions, and of course exploring the location before we start snapping. The magic ticket to a rut-less journey.
