When I want to go beyond simply reading a passage, this is the process I use:

1. Read & observe
Read the text. Write down what stands out, your questions, and anything that makes you pause.

2. Read the context
Read the verses before and after. Ask: What is happening here?

3. Zoom out
Look at the bigger picture. Who wrote the book? Who was it written to? When? Why? What is the book about?

4. Interpret
Return to the passage and ask what it means in light of the context. Don't start with what you think it means. Start with what the text says.

5. Cross-reference
Look at other Scriptures that speak to the same idea. Let Scripture help you understand Scripture.

6. Revisit your questions
Go back to your original observations. What has been answered? What did you misunderstand? What still needs exploring?

7. Reflect
Ask: What does this teach me about God?

8. Apply
Ask: What should I do with what I've learned? Then make a specific plan to obey.
Read → Understand → Respond → Obey.

Hope this helps 🤗

If you’ve ever felt confused by a Bible verse, it may not be the verse that’s unclear — it may be the context that’s missing.
Scripture was written in sections, letters, poems, and narratives. Reading a single verse without its surrounding passage often leads to partial understanding.
Read the whole section. Let the thought unfold fully.

This approach is part of the framework in ‘How to Read the Bible Without Getting Lost’.

I know what it’s like to want to take your walk with God seriously, but feel frustrated every time you try to study the Bible because you don’t know where to start, how one story fits with another, or how to study Scripture well.

That struggle is part of why I started initiatives like Women of the Word and The Bible Listening Project. But I also recognise that many people may never be able to participate in either of those.

So I created something you can use on your own.

How to Read the Bible Without Getting Lost is a practical guide designed to help you understand the Bible as one unified story and approach it with clarity and confidence without feeling overwhelmed.

I’ve priced it as low as ¢27 so that as many people as possible can access it.

If you’ve ever opened your Bible with good intentions and closed it confused, this guide is for you.
