Corn tortilla tacos at @tacodeli! 🌮

Known to locals but new to me! This was a great find after Sunday’s walk through Houston’s Sixth Ward and @artsdistricthou.

The menu wasn’t labeled for dietary restrictions, but a quick Google search gave me enough information to know what questions to ask at this location.

🚗 PARKING | Free parking available in the lot next to the restaurant.

📋 THE CELIAC CHECK | See slide 10 for my assessment of this dining experience from a celiac perspective.

✍🏼 MY STORY | First, I confirmed that the corn tortillas were actually gluten-free, not simply made with corn. Then I asked whether they were warmed on the same grill as flour tortillas.

The cashier wasn’t sure, so he brought in a more experienced staff member, who confirmed the tortillas were gluten-free and checked with the manager about the cooking process.

Next came the seafood recommendations. Both staff members agreed on the Shrimposito (pictured) and Sunset Shrimp (which I ate so quickly I forgot to photograph!). Their recommendations were spot on.

Then, halfway through my Shrimposito, a moment of panic. The shrimp looked suspiciously crunchy!

Back to the counter I went. What’s this coating? Is it fried? How is it cooked?

The cashier seemed to panic a little with me and went to get the manager. He explained that the shrimp had a cornmeal coating and that they didn’t fry the taco ingredients, so a shared fryer wasn’t a concern for this dish.

Deep breath!

The process of determining whether the food would work for me took longer than I’d like, especially when I’m hungry, but the tacos were delicious.

Now that I know what questions to ask and what to expect at this location, I suspect my next visit will be more relaxed. And next time, I’ll know to order three tacos instead of two! 😜🌮
