We spent an evening in Pittsboro, meeting the local businesses and makers who call this 17-acre campus home. Co-founder Lyle Estill showed us around, and I loved getting to hear the stories behind the places we were tasting our way through.

🌱 What exactly is The Plant?

It’s a question we hear a lot — and one we’re not sure has ever had a simple answer.

In a new feature for Business North Carolina, writer Bill Horner III explores The Plant as a place shaped by repair, reinvention, abundance, and community — from this land’s beginnings as Sunshine Gardens, through its industrial years, to the wonderfully unconventional collection of people, businesses, makers, growers and dreamers who call it home today.

The article also looks toward the future as Pittsboro and Chatham County change around us — and at something we care deeply about preserving along the way:

A place where you can simply come as you are.

As Pittsboro Commissioner Candace Hunziker puts it in the story:

“The best part is that when you go to The Plant, you get to go as yourself — and everyone else does too.”

That might be as good an answer as any to the question of what The Plant is. 💚
