2025 was a pretty good writing year. Of course and obviously I didn't finish any of my full length projects, but I felt good about what I did do and it seemed like a year of mental breakthroughs. These projects make more sense.

Early on got published in The Rose Books Reader. Definitely think this house is going somewhere; humbled to be part of that book and certainly hope to do more.

Had Tyler tickets in March so I was only at AWP for a day. Then during that day my grandmother died so I didn't spend much time at the conference. The night before I went to a reading and the day of I did run into a few folks, left a message on the telephone at the Rose Books booth, and saw a friend from work who came in from Vegas to hang out. Baltimore will be even better, I'm sure.

Did a reading of my piece from the Rose book at @neonclowndreamlounge, which was a cool space. In the spirit of the main character I tried to read the piece in auto tune but we couldn't quite get it to work. Had to book an earlier Greyhound out of there because Philly doesn't have a bus station and I didn't want to sit in the cold until 4am.

Got a full scholarship to Mendocino Coast Writers Conference with a workshop under Katya Apekina, which was wonderful. Made some great friends along the way (sifting through the glass beach in Fort Bragg was very cool) and I came away with big questions to answer regarding my train book.

Finally I can't believe I got into the Massachusetts Review with a sorta experimental piece I wouldn't have had the nerve to try if I didn't know editors @nicoleshawanjunior and @caitsmakesart wouldn't be receptive to it. I'm gonna try to film a reading of that piece soon and then I'm currently wrapping up and some interview answers for MR now

My third year teaching as a fiction mentor for the MIU MFA was hard, but ultimately worthwhile.

Beyond that I finished modding my Atari VCS into a PC; I've been typing into the @ellipsuswrites program (slowly trying to get away from Google docs) to expand my Rose Books piece into something longer.

Some potentially great stuff could be happening this year but I hesitate to even put that into the air and jinx it.

Some favorite photos from AWP in LA from the past week. Thank you so much to everyone continuing to support @rosebooks.co and @morningwritingclub—it’s really wild to look back at the past two years and see how much has been born from a stray thought: “What if I actually started my own press instead of just thinking about starting my own press?” And then so many questions after that: What if I sell out of the tenth printing of SOMEONE WHO ISN’T ME? What if Rose Books had a hotline? What if we published a Rose Books Reader of short writing? What if I started a writing club to help cover the costs of the press? What if we had a booth at the conference? What if I tried to help bring beautiful things into the world? Every step is an experiment, including attending AWP as a publisher this year, and I loved being able to meet and see so many long distance friends this week, either at the book fair, at a reading, or on the sidewalk outside of our after party. And a special thanks to my Rose Books team @k8tiecoleman, @hurleywink, and @taelerk for making everything run so smoothly this week. TAKE RISKS FOR THE SAKE OF BEAUTY.
