"Social Sculpture: Inside Baltimore’s Art Scene: In Baltimore’s art scene, the creative set didn’t wait for the art world to arrive. They built it themselves. Baltimore has been my home, where I have worked, and where I have lived since 2016. The reason I have stayed, when other creatives were leaving for New York, D.C., or wherever the next thing was supposed to be, is the art and the artists who are firmly planted here. Initially, I couldn’t quite articulate what made the scene so compelling. I just knew it was something real: a creativity that felt palpable, almost atmospheric, and completely contagious. Having spent time working in a Seattle gallery, I knew it was rare. ...The artists and culture-keepers who make Baltimore what it is do it themselves, and they make a way—even when it appears there is no way. The creative economy here is held together by a community of care: It’s authentic, it’s real, and it’s growing through passionate local efforts." #Fridayart via @taha_hey . . One of my 5th graders constantly says, "Ms. Peck, no disrespect, but you’re nosey. How come you always know our business?" Me: "10-year-olds don’t have ‘tea.’ Go sit down." But you know what? They might be onto something… Case in point: I was on the train, minding my business (barely), vibing to Maleek Berry in my beloved Five Below headphones. Then, I overheard someone behind me mention Nick Cave—whom I adore. I almost turned around but showed remarkable restraint. ( Love. Love @nickcaveart) But then I heard, "No one cared about Sam Gilliam until he died." Before I could stop myself, I whipped around like a detective in a plot twist and said, "I cared. I loved his work. The drape paintings" @samgilliamart It was too late. Eye contact was made. I was in. Luckily, I ended up facing three beautiful humans who spoke my language. And that’s how I met Taya Heydari and started diving into some incredible work. @nyc_subway_stories @mta Lesson of the day? Maybe I am nosey… but sometimes, it pays off. #NYCSubwayStories #AccidentalEavesdropping #ArtLoversUnite ALWAYS #stayintheyellow💛

Taha Heydari’s solo exhibition ’12 Volt Fire’ is currently on view at the gallery until February 16th. This exhibition presents a survey of paintings of seemingly absurd and disparate moments related to the 1979 Iranian Revolution, with the aim of investigating its metaphysics, and of reframing it as a dynamic network of ‘actants’ that traverse socio-political, technological, mythical and collective forces. Taha Heydari’s painting is a re-interpretation of an image of the colossal statue of Shāpūr I (AD 240–272), the second Shah (king) of the Sassanid Empire. This painting serves as one of the artist's many investigations into the disparate moments or “actants” of the 1979 Iranian revolution, using painting as an investigative tool that considers the agencies of image, technology/media and the non-human more broadly. The statue had been lying on the ground at the entrance of the Bishapur Kazerun cave for 1,400 years, following its collapse during the Arab invasion of Iran and the fall of the Sassanian Empire. In 1957, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, commissioned a group of Iranian military personnel to raise the statue to its original position and repair its broken foot using iron and cement. .

'Burning Wednesday' by Taha Heydari is replete with references of Chaharshanbe Suri (Scarlet Wednesday), an Iranian festival of the fire dance celebrated on the eve of the last Wednesday of the year, of ancient Zoroastrian origin. The artist couples this symbolism with a splash of yellow paint that spreads organically across the canvas like an untamed flame bursting through a domestic space, bringing forth the destructive nature of fire. This richly textured work of carefully painted tiles, echoing the distinctive grid-like application, appears in contrast to the yellow wash. Two figures greet this traumatic scene differently: one accepts the fire while the other flees.
