LAST DAY: Double your gift! 🌎 Today (October 6) is the final day of our Earth Gives campaign! Currently, only 2% of all philanthropic funding goes to climate, environmental, wildlife, and conservation nonprofits. And less than 1% goes to youth action programs. Help us change that right now and double your impact for Young Eco-Heroes with today's special match! Starting at 10:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM ET, donations of $100 or more will be matched. As Jane Goodall said, "What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." Make a difference today and support young environmental leaders! At VIFF, we sat down with writer and director Justin Ducharme to talk about Seventeen, a film that follows three urban Indigenous lives intersecting over a single day in Vancouver through displacement, survival and connection. We got into the incredible performances, what inspired the story, the themes of family, colonial displacement and chosen community, and how Vancouver, especially the Downtown Eastside, becomes more than just a backdrop to the film. We also talked about how the story connects back to a specific phase of Justin’s own life and the level of detail that went into the sound design and creating the world of the film. Really enjoyed this conversation and getting a deeper look into the thought behind Seventeen. Full interview with Justin Ducharme is available now on our YouTube channel. On this International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we honor the culture, history, and wisdom of Indigenous communities worldwide. Today, we are proud to highlight 2017 Eco-Hero Ta’Kaiya Blaney! 🌿✨ A member of the Tla’amin First Nation, Ta’Kaiya grew up along the shores of the Salish Sea, using her voice, music, and tradition to champion Indigenous rights, environmental justice, and youth empowerment. From training youth Salish Sea Ambassadors to addressing the United Nations five times, she embodies what it means to speak from the heart for our planet and its people. 🌊📢 Watch this clip of Ta’Kaiya speaking at the 2015 Parliament of the World’s Religions, and join us in celebrating the Indigenous leaders protecting our shared home! The future isn’t waiting—it’s already being led by Indigenous youth. This National Indigenous History Month, we’re recognizing young leaders across Canada who are driving change in powerful and meaningful ways: ✨ Autumn Peltier (Anishinaabe, 21) has taken her advocacy for clean drinking water to the global stage, speaking at the United Nations and becoming a leading voice for water protection and Indigenous rights. ✨ Shina Novalinga (Inuk, 27) uses digital platforms to share Inuit throat singing and traditions with millions, helping preserve and celebrate culture for a new generation. ✨ Ta’Kaiya Blaney (Tla’amin Nation, 25) combines music and activism, using her voice to advocate for climate action and Indigenous sovereignty. ✨ Justin Langan (Métis, 27) is empowering Indigenous youth through community leadership, education initiatives, and work focused on sustainability and opportunity-building. ✨ Theland Kicknosway (Potawatomi/Cree, 21) is a cultural advocate, dancer, and educator using his platform to promote Indigenous traditions, raise awareness, and inspire youth through leadership and community action. At The Career Foundation, we see firsthand how systemic barriers can impact Indigenous youth in accessing education and meaningful employment. These leaders are a powerful reminder of why our work matters. Through programs like Youth Thrive (link in bio), we are committed to supporting Indigenous youth in building skills, accessing opportunities, and achieving their full potential—while ensuring approaches are inclusive, culturally responsive, and rooted in community. Together, these changemakers are not just raising awareness—they are creating pathways, strengthening communities, and shaping a more equitable future. 👉 Know an Indigenous youth leader making an impact? Tag them below or share their work—we’d love to learn, celebrate, and continue lifting up the next generation of leaders. @autumn.peltier @shinanova @takaiyablaney @justinrlangan @the_landk #NationalIndigenousHistoryMonth #IndigenousYouth #Reconciliation #YouthLeadership #WorkforceDevelopment #Inclusion A promotional graphic with decorative geometric patterns in shades of brown and orange at the top and bottom borders.
