#Nigeria just took a historic step: The Federal Executive Council approved amending the Mental Health Act to decriminalize attempted suicide.

Pain is not a crime. A person in crisis needs care, not a charge sheet.

This moment was years in the making. Proud to have led the #SuicideNotCrimeNG campaign with @nigerianmentalhealth working with 40+ organizations, in collaboration with the Nigerian Suicide Prevention Advocacy coalition — and to have helped build Nigeria’s first Suicide Prevention Strategy, the first national endorsement that attempted suicide must leave the criminal code.

Thank you to every survivor, clinician, advocate, faith leader, journalist, and official who refused to let a colonial law keep costing lives. Special recognition to the Minister of Health, Senator @asuquoekpenyongjr, the Taskforce, Justice, and all who moved this from paper to Council.

Now the National Assembly must pass it. Implement the Mental Health Act. Pass the Suicide Prevention Bill. The 15% suicide reduction target the Minister of Health has also committed to will not be met by repeal alone.

Shame is a self-evaluative emotion that leads to us devaluing ourselves and disconnecting from ourselves and community. Sometimes we’re taught through how we were raised or our cultures. Shame has long been a tool for social control and abuse. Some people argue that shame can be functional and used as a means of self-regulation but the line is very thin before it turns into self-debasement and the consequences don’t out weigh the potential benefits. Shame is correlated with increased depression, anxiety, addiction related issues, and complex PTSD. Even in therapy, people still may not share with their therapist the single most transformative experience in their life because of shame and the fear of rejection and exposure it brings. Still, as with all emotions we should never try to repress it because it will transform into negative symptoms when we do.

None of us can guarantee that we will never experience shame, but we can become better at responding to the feeling and becoming shame resilient. Shame does not have to bind you and keep you from others. Instead we become more shame resilient when we admit our vulnerabilities, challenge our limiting beliefs, practice empathy, and place blame where it belongs.

I had the immense privilege to be interviewed on @fox5dc to talk about how to break down barriers for diverse communities to seeking mental health care. Speaking on the work we do with TalkNaija, our hopes for the new year, and how to find a therapist that fits you, was an absolute joy. Also a full circle surprise bonus was being interviewed by an old classmate from UGA.

If there’s anything I want to accomplish in this lifetime, it’s to be someone who helps to guide people to healing. I truly don’t know if I’m made to do anything else.

On the heels of #HumanRightsDay this week, we elevate an issue of liberty in public health: the decriminalization of attempted suicide.

Nigeria has entered into two international treaties that govern human rights for persons with disabilities. First, the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, "recognizes the right of everyone to the best possible physical and mental health."

Second, the African Human and People's Rights Charter establishes a general right to an environment conducive to further development and specifically requires "special measures of protection" for disabled people.

The existing legal penalties for attempted suicide create a negative regulatory environment for those psychologically vulnerable.
