Heavy leg kick countered by a guillotine attempt! Lawson's composure and deep breaths in the face of pressure. Refusing to give up center cage.

On March 19th, I got into the ring for my first boxing match. I started boxing exactly a year ago but if I’m honest, I only started because I wanted to lose a few pounds, exercise my way out of falling into depression after losing my baby, and I didn’t care for any other form of exercise. About 5 months ago, some of the pros from my gym convinced me that I should fight in the Golden Gloves.

I literally thought they were out of their mind but somehow they proved that if you hang around people long enough, especially those that believe in you, you’ll start believing in yourself as well. So, I started training. I started correcting my eating habits. I started preparing for the hardest thing that I had ever done physically.

Throughout these last 5 months, I’ve stressed to the point of losing sleep at night, I lost 16 lbs (5 of them were in the last week leading up to the fight, I doubted myself more times than I could count, I trained 3-4 times a week, sometimes twice a day the last few weeks. I literally turned into a different person those last few weeks.

I stopped eating fried foods, drinking pops, stop purchasing sweets at the grocery store and started focusing on whole foods. I worked my butt off. I went up against someone who had been training for years, had SEVERAL fights under her belt and is currently a boxing coach. And though I didn’t win, I didn’t get knocked out, a black eye, a broken nose and we fought until the end with no ref having to stop the fight at any point.

Here’s what I did win…
- A new found confidence that I can do ANYTHING.
- I’m healthier than I’ve EVER been.
- A group of people who push me inside and outside of the ring.
- A coach that won’t let me be a crybaby in the ring but will let me cry on his shoulder when life is LIFIN!
- A new found family of fighters who get and SEE ME! Not who I may want to be. Not who I feel I’m supposed to be. But who I am. Right now. And they accept me while pushing me to be better in ways I never imagined.

Didn’t win the fight… but I won in every way that actually matters.

And I’m just getting started. 🥊🔥

This week training was great, got the most out of everyday. I know that because every night I would collapse lol. At this point in camp it’s all about staying consistent. Do the same routine every week, I make it boring so the workout regimen comes off simple.

Stay sharp 🤿
