Thank you so much to everyone who came out to the third annual Pittsburgh Jewish Zine Festival at @mr_roboto_project! We saw our biggest turnout yet and had an absolute blast sharing pickles, art, learning, & DJ Meddyglyn’s ambiance with yinz.

This year, we raised $917 at our merch table to donate to @gazasoupkitchen, over TRIPLE last year’s total. We are so incredibly proud of our steadily growing community and the impact we can make together.

Watch this space; copies of our collaborative zine Atzmeinu (Our Bones) will be going up for online sale very soon.

⭕️ Come learn with Olivia & Tzvi at Beis Lakish's Rosh Hashana class, "Drawing New Traditions"! ⭕️ Sunday Sept. 13th from 2 to 6pm Register at link in bio. We'll be diving into what that magical Ḥoni the Circle Maker has to say about scarcity, abundance, and what to do when the traditions we've inherited don't meet our current material needs. We'll be learning a portion of Taanit 23a in the original Hebrew & Aramaic—but fear not, all you need to know is your Alef Bet! If you need help learning the hebrew alphabet, reach out to tzvi at tzvi@beislakish.com . Beis Lakish classes are always free to attend, and masking while indoors required.

1. I led a papermaking workshop yesterday! with plants (+1 mushroom) from a spot on the Ohio River. Knotweed mugwort pokeweed vetch false indigo + others. It was my first time bringing others into the practice and it was awesome.

2. I got to hang with the Young Naturalists for two days, so we did Colors of the River at Duck Hollow. What a cool group with new perspectives on pigments <3

3. Stephen jumped in for a lichen cameo with Maria Pinto. The next slide is possibly a young coral slime mold.

5. Forgotten in Garfield…

6. Checking on some century-old tar and oil on the Allegheny

7+8. Colors of the River at Dead Man’s Hollow. Super special place and people.

9-15. THE RUINS! Wow. Almost too speechless to type about it. Go see this old coal mine stewarded by mosaicists for yourself.

16. I’m collecting photos of PA Dutch-like folk art, and so much symbolism is found in trivets. Makes sense as the kitchen is the hearth is the place to love and protect. This is my dear friend Stephen’s trivet, which has been in the family for a couple generations.

17. Me in high school, holding a trombone with my best low brass friends. I played thruout college in every ensemble I could find but put it down for nearly a decade. I’ve just picked it up again after finding a trombone from the 70’s in a late rabbi’s estate sale downtown Pittsburgh. Something is waking in me that is very happy to have a voice again and I’d love to share some music with you all soon (guitar melodica trombone whatever). I’m writing a brass hocket!

Mostly pigment-making for/with others lately. Mostly making music and cleaning my house. Mostly off of Instagram and stagnant in my writing. Thanks for your patience, get in the water, love on your friends.

📖 Learning for Liberation: A Shavuot All-Night Study In 📖
📆 from Fri, 5/22 at 11 pm to dawn!
📍Bantha Tea Bar, 5002 Penn Ave.

—

On the holiday of Shavuot, it’s customary to stay up all night studying Torah. We’re putting our own spin on this tradition with a drop-in, all-night text study ft. various Jewish and secular texts that we consider to be fertile ground for liberatory interpretation & discussion. Political education is foundational to the work of collective liberation, and also, we love getting in spirited, late-night arguments.

Friends from @beislakish , @rmlpgh , @talmudmagic , etc. will be facilitating text studies, but please also feel free to bring your own zines, articles, source sheets, etc. for solo or group study. If you want, you can bring a dairy (yes, it’s a Shavuot thing) or vegan snack to share.

Anyone respectful of the (always queer, anti-zionist, etc.) space’s intentions is welcome. Come anytime, leave anytime. Loose schedule TBA.

Accessibility: Bantha is wheelchair accessible. Because we’ll be indoors, we ask that you wear a high-quality (N95, KN95, or KF94) mask when not eating or drinking tea. If you’re sick, are testing positive for COVID, and/or have had close contact (ex. a a housemate) with COVID, please sit this one out. We’d love to see you next time!
