The photos speak for themselves.

These images, taken this morning by a Maui County lifeguard, show the north and south ends of Kāʻanapali Beach. Once again, the sand has returned. Beaches are dynamic—they naturally erode and rebuild with the seasons.

Despite this, Kā’anapali operators association and @pilikahakaifoundation continue to push beach nourishment as the solution. Beach nourishment is a temporary fix that can have long-term impacts on offshore ecosystems while failing to address the root cause of chronic erosion.

Look closely at where the beach continues to struggle. The worst erosion is occurring where shoreline hardening has been implemented over the years—sandbags, erosion skirts, sand burritos, and landscaping designed to protect oceanfront development. These projects interrupt the natural movement of the shoreline.

Instead of repeatedly engineering the beach, it’s time to restore our natural sand dunes and have an honest conversation about managed retreat. The shoreline needs room to migrate naturally if we want healthy beaches to exist for future generations.

The beach came back. The question is whether we’ll continue trying to force nature to conform to development—or finally adapt our development to nature.

Shame on @pilikahakaifoundation we are not backing down. The community will not let this happen.

Was so awesome sharing our film @lahainarising with the National Association of County Officials @nacocounties and the National Organization of Black County Officials @nobcoinc

Not only did we get to screen the film, but we got to bring our community leaders and organizers like @mikey_no_c with @lahainacommunitylandtrust our councilwoman @tamara4mauinui and Jee, @mauiunitedway CEO, and @paele_kulani of course. We all got together to have great discussion with county officials from all over the United States about things like disaster preparedness, and bottom up approach to decision making.

The Lahaina Rising Impact Campaign aims to do exactly this type of thing. Use the film to make as great of an impact as possible by showing it to decision makers, leaders, and change makers from all over the world, get them to feel the weight and raw emotion and then let them sit down and listen first-hand to the community leaders who are doing the real impactful work.
