The recent reporting by EenVandaag, AD and NOS about the culture of fear within the UWV training program for insurance physicians once again shows how vulnerable social safety becomes when workload, hierarchy and fear reinforce each other.
Trainee physicians describe intimidation, high pressure and a climate in which they do not feel free to learn or to speak up. The contrast between being safe and feeling safe enough to act becomes painfully visible here.
At Het Acteursgenootschap, we explore exactly this dynamic in our performance Scenes on Social Safety. One of the scenes is even titled “Culture of Fear.”
Theatre can make tangible what reports and protocols cannot: how culture forms, how behaviour spreads, and how difficult it can be to speak up when the risks feel personal.
Social safety is not a side issue.
It is the foundation for good work, good learning and good care.
